Dr Abrasive has been developing an USB interface prototype called 'Saturn Satlator' for Sega Saturn which connects via the VCD (MPEG) card slot and loads cue/bin disc images from USB hard drive or flash stick. The prototype can also load binaries directly which is intended for homebrew after the product is released.

Check this excellent video shot/edited by cTrix over at YouTube for more info.

The design is based on a CPLD which serves as glue logic towards the card slot bus along with an ARM microcontroller handling the rest. This is the product of several years of reverse engineering efforts.

Very impressive work!

Here you can see the Saturn Satlator inserted in the VCD/MPEG port.

This is the Saturn Satlator shown with chip side up.

For those who are interested in this project (like me), keep an eye on this forum thread:

I was checking around for alternatives, and did find some interesting projects.

Like Pseudo Saturn which requires Action Replay or clones of it. Those who wants extra RAM to support certain games seem to have this device anyway.

Project home: https://github.com/cyberwarriorx/pseudosaturn

Pseudo Saturn Kai: http://ppcenter.webou.net/pskai/

Pseudo Saturn Kai compatibility list:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PIo9W73gVVky1pw8hD7LLLmCFmdJUzJxCzLsfnDBgwo/

The Pseudo Saturn Kai project seems more active and have binary downloads with ready to burn disc image (ISO).

There are also modchips in the classical sense, but they seem to lack in compatibility between different Sega Saturn models, and have several chips on a board with connectors, so probably in the same price range as the USB loader will end up in.

I didn't know about RHEA. That's interesting, and already shipping it seems.

Checked the official site for RHEA/PHOEBE: https://gdemu.wordpress.com/

There is also a similar SD card device for Dreamcast called GDEMU on the same site.

BTW: No one here claimed the USB loader or other projects were any "better", as you might have noticed, but I'm aware most other websites reporting this used the clickbait title 'Sega Saturn CD - Cracked after 20 years' from YouTube which is inaccurate.

Yes, looks great, and SD card slots to spare. BTW: I added Arcade Projects to the web links section.
