Nintendo is busy shipping out there new NES Mini in time for its big launch on November 11th, and there is already unboxing videos, but now going to go deep inside and see what is under the hood and what makes it tick, and surprize its nice in there!

So thanks to PCBrown for taking the time to open up his brand-new NES Mini he was reviewing for the launch soon, we get to see that sure enough the 30 built-in games are burned into one flash soldered onto the board, so not replaceable easy enough, but the rest of the board is what is amazing, Nintendo's choice for the main chip and size of flash, here is our own exclusive MaxConsole UnderGround rundown on the keypoints that make up the breast of the NES Mini, which is same as Mini Famicom released in Japan.

* AllWinner R16 System-On-Chip
* CPU: Quad-Core ARM Cortex-A7
* GPU: Dual-Core Mali 400MP2
* Up to 2GB of DDR3 (sadly not that much on-board)
* 8GB FLASH (yes, large enough for all of library of NES and lots more)
* AXP223 Power Management IC (allows for battery/screen control)

So those are the keypoints, as you can see Nintendo picked a very powerful chipset and flash, so I think personally they will release other models, a mini SNES, mini N64, as the board can handle it, but it would be so nice if hopefully someone cool in the 'scene' dumps the flash, finds the GPIO points and rebuilds it with all the NES/SNES library and with luck N64 and better emulators, all before big 'N' does it and of course alot better than buying a bunch of 'Mini Consoles' over the next few months/years from them.

Check out the full-res attached screenshot of the inside of Mini-NES, and the attached PDF's of the two main chips, and we will be updating an following this news story as more details roll in, in the meantime we love to hear your comments on it.

Full-res board shot here.

I suspected Nintendo would aim low and use some NOAC (NES-on-a-chip) based solution, but instead they went even lower and used cheap smartphone circuits and wrote a software emulator (Android?). Imagine if Nintendo used original NES parts instead, where possible, now that would have been a real treat for the fans!

Those 4 big fat testpoints look like a UART to me... and those chips have a USB recovery mode: http://linux-sunxi.org/FEL

Source: Marcan @ Twitter

Quote:
FEL is a low-level subroutine contained in the BootROM on Allwinner devices. It is used for initial programming and recovery of devices using USB.

Your device therefore needs to be attached to a host (your PC) by means of a USB cable, connected to a port where the sunxi device will present itself as a USB 'slave' (i.e. in device mode). Usually that means the "OTG" connector.

Great for reflashing more games then...

Plutoo has released a C program to scramble/descramble raw NAND dumps from the NES Classic. Nice to see that NERD (Nintendo European Research & Development) rely on XOR to secure the NES ROMs for their kachikachi emulator, the code even has some similarities with their new hire coding challenge, it all makes sense now.

Hackers Unlock NES Classic, upload New Games via USB Cable

Quote:
1. Go here http://linux-sunxi.org/FEL/USBBoot#Using_sunxi-fel_on_Windows and install driver with zadig.
Fel mode is activated by holding down reset while switching on power button - http://linux-sunxi.org/FEL

2. Grab tool here https://github.com/madmonkey1907/hakchi/releases
Dump uboot and kernel from your nes. uboot should have md5 b13b538f6b7c86623ceea69c456d4eb5, if it's not, it might be unsafe to continue. 8ce1857653874e8f0cd3fe68abe1bb4a and 9b8046b47c947d9fa322976c038003e0 also confirmed to work.

3. Prepare roms - with nesmini shell, rom is a directory, not a file. Template+tool here https://www.dropbox.com/s/3t3wrkhw26shro0/nesromtool.zip?dl=0
tl;dr you need a rom, image, and optional *.desktop file. it's a text file you can edit.

4. Place rom dirs in
mod/hakchi/transfer/rootfs/usr/share/games/nes/kachikachi/
nesromtool will do this for you if you unpack it in nesromtool subdir of hakci-gui tree

5. unpack kernel / repack kernel

6. Do a memboot, nes will shutdown, switch it to fel mode again.

7. Flash kernel <- do this ONLY ONCE. there is no need to ever do it again. until custom kernels appear that is.
If there is a save in first slot of Super Mario Bros. it will load mod, otherwise it will load stock shell.
You also get getty on uart interface, but there isn't much use in it if you don't have uart soldered.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not responsible for any damage you might inflict upon your nesmini

...and news about retroarch running on NES Mini.
