Hello my PlayStation 1 (9002) is acting strange when loading backup right if i turn the laser pot up most the way it will some time load the backups from power on but i cant leave it up high it will burn the laser out and like i say it only boots the backups sometime but if i power up the console to the menu ie where the memory card manager is and the CD player and then put the backup in it loads it every time with the laser on 14.5v now this laser is only 4 5 months old and iv only just started using it so don't think its the laser and like i say if i load the menu up first it plays with no problem but originals will boot from power on so could this be a problem with the MM3 chip or the hex dump which i got off of here (EurAsia) and flashed the chip my self which i have done meany times before for friends and family with no problems at all any help and advice would be great

Thanks David

The MM3 modchip is only patching data through the CD controller when you start loading the disc, after that it's not affecting anything (unless the install is bad).

Your problems could be due to the CD-R media used, burner hardware, burn speed or perhaps software.

If you are using Windows I recommend ImgBurn as software to burn PSX games, for Linux 'cdrdao' (via K3b if you want a GUI).

The media surface of the CD-R should be dark of green or blue color tint for PSX use, this is common with CD-R dedicated for audio use. The bad (for this purpose) CD-R brands are light on surface side, usually yellow or green tint, primarily intended for general data use on computers. When it comes to naming brands to recommend I think it's generally a waste of time since brands switch manufacturers and actual media type used frequently which leads to confusion over time. Unfortunately, the good discs for PSX are usually more expensive than others.

You also need to pay attention to the burning speed, use slow speed, I usually select a speed one step above the slowest. For example, if your burner support x1, x2, x4, ..., then select x2. If x2 is your lowest, then select x4, and so on.

When it comes to burners the dedicated PC SATA (IDE) full size 5.25" drives are usually better than slim internal ones found in laptops and similar devices. Also, avoid anything connected via USB as it generally rely on drivers which might interfere with the required burner software.

Try carefully holding the PSX in vertical (90 degree) position and power it on, if the game loads then it is media or laser calibration related.

If a game backup/copy can load at all, regardless how you start it, the problem is not modchip related.

Oh one thing i forgot to say is i had to put a new pot on the laser as when i got it off Ebay as fault the person had broken it by unscrewing it to far and braking the head of it i put a 5k OHMS on which i think is a little big but i got in at around 14v which then it started playing the ps1 games and the backups when loading them from the menu sorry to be annoying

Replacing that pot could be ur issue. Idk wat the stock one is supposed to be off hand, but if there's a large discrepancy in between them, its going to take a LOT of fine tuning to get it right....

"Off hand" just means from memory. As for the new laser assembly, that would be the easiest solution. Either get a refurbished one or try your luck with one of the chinese knockoffs....

Forget models, choosing the correct diagram depends on motherboard revisions, just look at the board and find the best matching MM3 diagram based on solder point areas. There is a new MM3 diagram here, might work, but try older diagrams first.
