This may be a noobish question, but can you disable the NTSC mod safely on OneChip? I have a PAL console, PAL LCD screen all PAL games so I am not interested in loading US/JAP imports. Having the BIOS screens messed up is annoying.

I read somewhere and can't find it now that you could de-solder pins 3 and 4. Can I do that safely?

Can anyone tell me what the different pins on the chip do? I can't find them documented anywhere.

Thanks

I have never heard of this problem with messed up BIOS screen, perhaps a sync problem with your LCD screen at certain frequencies during sync negotiation? The modchip pins (besides 5V and Ground) patch the CD controller during boot, nothing related to video output.

Thanks for the quick reply. As I understand it, the slim SCPH-102 consoles had extra bios protection against running imports and checks the console is running in NTSC mode when you put in a NTSC game. This is why MM3 doesn't work in PAL consoles for imports and why onechip isn't needed in the American SCPH-101 console.

Any screen that has support for NTSC and PAL wouldn't see an issue as it would switch between modes. The SONY SCPH-152 screen is hard set for PAL only, so I get scrolling images on the screen as the signal is pushed from 50Hz to 60Hz until a game loads.

According to http://www.fatcat.co.nz/psx/ps1.html the onechip serves 3 functions. It provides the standard modchip fuctionality (pins 5 and 6), stealth functionality (pins 2 and 7) and puts the console into NTSC mode (pins 3 and 4) for the BIOS to defeat the extra protection SONY put in.

I'm only wondering if I can utilise the modchip functionality without the NTSC hack.

The SCPH-103 (Japanese region) has an additional region check in BIOS (firmware menu), but it's not eliminated by modchips like ONEchip or MM3, you simply have to patch the ISO (disc image) to the same region as the console. This is one of the reasons SCPH-103 JAP models shows up cheap on eBay and other places, not desirable for region free modding.
