Remembering the Xbox v1.6 hardware release
xbox Robert writes: "Shortly after the first wiki system was installed here at EurAsia back in May 2004 (ah, those were the days), I started the Xbox v1.6 event log which was a project to report on the events taking place in the Xbox hacking scene after Microsoft released the Xbox v1.6 hardware revision mainly in an attempt to prevent LPC based modchips. Reading about these old events today serves mostly as a nostalgia trip for those who were there, but perhaps fun for young aspiring hackers as well. Enjoy the old posts from legendary hacking teams like Xecuter, SmartXX and OzXodus who were in fierce competition back then, yet occasionally helped each other out besides trolling. There was honour back then (hehe). The whole community working towards the same goal; to beat the new protection. The events are posted chronologically with the oldest first at the top of the page towards the solution at the bottom, most of the source links are broken by now but left in there anyway as part of history."

XBMC4XBox 3.5 Beta 1 is now available
xbox [source: BuZz @ xbmc4xbox.org.uk] A late Happy Xmas to you all, and wishing the best for the new year. What better than to give you a new XBMC4XBox release to test though. Just in time :) The 3.5 Beta 1 release has seen a massive amount of work from the last stable, and includes all fixes from 3.3.3, but has been ongoing in development since the first 3.3 release. Released now as a Beta 1 as it does require some further testing, and there may be new issues or regressions, but I would encourage people to try it alongside the current stable and feed back any problems via the forum or bugtracker.

XBMC4XBOX status update for September
xbox [source: xbmc4xbox.org.uk] In the last two and a half months there has been a lot of progress with XBMC4XBOX. This project site has improved, with better integration (visually) of the forum, as well as a brand new bug-tracker at http://redmine.exotica.org.uk/projects/xbmc4xbox which includes all the data from the old Sourceforge hosted Trac. The restoration of the wiki is currently in progress, thanks to the help from the XBMC team – especially Ned Scott – who has provided us with a full xml dump of their wiki to use as a base for the reconstruction. The forum is now getting established and currently has 400 members with over 3500 posts. If you haven’t signed up please do – and join in the discussions. You will find a friendly bunch of XBOX enthusiasts, with topics covering skin / python development, XBOX modifications and more. It is also a good place to get help if you are having any troubles installing or using XBMC4XBOX.

XBMC4XBOX 3.2 Released
xbox [source: xbmc4xbox.org.uk] I am pleased to announce another release of XBMC4XBOX - v3.2. A number of bugs have been fixed, including a working fix for the lockups when using UPnP. There has been some significant performance improvements also, with the addition of the libjpeg-turbo library. Based on some code from XBMC, and some of our own, we now use this SIMD optimised library for decoding and thumbnailing JPEG images. The speed up is very noticeable – with navigating photos feeling at least twice as fast as before. XBMC4XBOX will now also use less memory when displaying and zooming in on images.

XBMC4Xbox Update
xbox [source: xbmc.org] As you should all know by now, Team XBMC does not maintain a build for the original Xbox. With that said, a few valiant souls have continued to port over some of the more beneficial lines of XBMC code and done other bug fixing the keep the aging Xbox as a valid option for many people out there. To this day, though more than 10 years old, the Xbox 1 remains one of the best boxes in the world for gaming, pictures, and SD video playback. Unfortunately, the dev team at our sister site XBMC4Xbox is currently dealing with some hosting problems. So for now, those of you still benefitting from your old Xbox may find them at their new site xbmc4xbox.org.uk until the hosting problems have been resolved. Plus, if you are still updating your old Xbox, it may be worth noting that their donation page is only a click away.

The Old Girl Is Still Going...
xbox [source: Whufclee @ xbmc4xbox.org] The old girl’s still got plenty to give. With hardware that’s now 10 years old you’d be forgiven for thinking the xbox classic’s time is up, however the old girl has still got plenty to give. True enough a lot of people now have HTPC’s, standalone media players or the latest games consoles to stream in true HD to their big screens. This however certainly doesn’t mean the demise of our trusty old xbox… Where else could you buy a media center that’s able to stream content from the internet (or locally) in a wide variety of formats, have an amazing library function, double up as an arcade machine and boot up in seconds? And all for the price of a couple of pints of beer! Yes these great warhorse machines can be picked up second hand for amazing prices, I know I’m not the only one to have picked one or two up for as little as 99p from a certain auction site.

Happy 10 Years Xbox…
xbox [source: Xman @ xbmc4xbox.org] Ten years ago today, the XBOX console was first introduced to North America. Since then, it has seen the release of many great games, including many of the best selling video game series’ of all time, and one of the largest online communities for games which allows gaming online, downloading new games/content, and tv, movie, and music streaming. The XBOX is now one of the top selling consoles of all time. Even more impressive however, are the efforts of people who receive no compensation for their work other than the thanks of like minded people. Shortly after the release of this console, a modding community was founded and has been growing steadily since then. XBOX users are now able not only to play XBOX games, but games from nearly every console up to the 5th generation through emulators. There are also full versions of Linux running very well on this console.

The cool thing is that the chihiro is soo similar to the xbox so Virtua Cop 3 even works with the xbox lightgun!.

Team XBMC: Farewell XBOX
xbox [source: xbmc.org] XBMC (XBMP really) started as a program for modified XBOX consoles. In the following years, XBMC has grown into a multi-platform, multi-architecture media center that runs on most standard hardware. The hardware and legal limitations of the XBOX were always a concern and the Team has instead focused on running on the hardware that most people already have. The last official release for the XBOX by the XBMC team was Atlantis, over 18 months ago. Since then, one brave soul (Arnova) has been merging code from the main codebase into the XBOX branch in our repository. Because there were many users out there that took advantage of these updates, we had no problem with this. But times have changed. The XBOX has hard limits for what it can handle. Some users are satisfied with these limits, and we encourage them to use XBMC there if they are happy. But it is a popular misconception that official XBOX development is still taking place by the team, so we have decided to set it free. We have enough on our plates already, and worrying about a deprecated platform just increases our workload. A few days ago the XBOX branch was finally removed from our subversion repository.

Arsenic Beta Release
xbox [source: HIZLO @ halomaps.com via xbox-scene.com] This program is pretty much all you're going to need when it comes to modding Halo. Arsenic's hardcore power ranges from its visually stunning graphics to its built in game and tag editor. You can chose anything within a map such as scenery, weapons, vehicles, etc... and hot swap on the drop of a dime. Duplication is now made easy with our new point and click system. Any object you wish to move in Arsenic will move and suck to the mesh or structure of your map, this will save you a lot of time when placing stuff in your environment. Our built in tag editor is amazing and simple to use, for example click on a warthog then chose the tag editor. You will be able to edit a wide range of physics right on the spot, all changes will take effect when you save your map. Arsenic has a built in Auto Update feature which will be a life savor when future updates are released. All updates will come from halomaps.com so anyone using this program will always have an up-to-date version. The updates will automatically be applied when you open up Arsenic. As of right now the beta release will be structured around modding Xbox maps and tags.

Aeon: a New Interface for XBMC
xbox [source: aeoncentral.com via xbox-scene.com] Aeon is a new interface for Xbox Media Center that revolves entirely around the user, their tastes and their media. Built specifically for HDTV, it uses the very latest features of XBMC's advanced skinning engine, rendering its textures natively at high definition. Aiming to offer full support for all of XBMC's library management and online features, it already boasts unparalleled user control of its information panels and 1080p backdrop changer. Comprehensive animation ensures smooth transitions between all states and windows, from Movie and TV libraries to Photo Walls and User Customisation. Aeon began life under the project title Xephyr, and is currently in the late "alpha" stages of development. While its design direction is established and its feature-set largely complete, there's still work to be done on vew types, user customisation and file management. As such, no bug reports are being requested at this time, though feature requests are still being considered. As the project enters its beta stage (planned for February 2008), a more rigorous process of public bug-testing and visual refinement will begin. A final version of Aeon is expected no later than Christmas 2008, by which time it should look substantially better than it does at present.

The XIR has been around for several years now. It is not a make once and forget project. Continually being updated to meet the demands of the users and increase functionality. Version 2.5 adds a much requested feature, the ability to turn on the xbox via the Eject button. The previous revision allowed users to eject the dvd tray, but this allows modchip control. This means that users with modchips that are enabled/disabled via the eject button can now be fully controlled by the XIR. The XIR is now 100% able to control 3rd+ generation modchips without soldering a single wire.

Help Nominate Xbmc For Sourceforge.net 2007 Community Choice Awards
xbox [source: Team-XBMC @ xbox-scene.com]
It is almost time for this years SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards (CCA). This is the second annual SourceForge CCA, last year the XBMC (Xbox Media Center) project won two categories; "best multimedia project" and "best game project". If you are a registered user on SourceForge.net (registration is free) then you can help to make sure that the XBMC project is eligible for this years CCA as well by nominating the XBMC project to one or more categories. Later, once all final nominees been decided then everyone will be able to vote for the OSD (Open Source Development) projects of their choice in each category. This year Team-XBMC hope that you will help us be nominated in at least the "Multimedia" category, and maybe the "Best Project" category as well, (as it is possible to be nominated in more than one category). The prize: 'bragging rights' and the SourceForge.net CCA logo on the SourceForge.net XBMC project page.

MC360 for XBMC now available from Official XBMC Skinning SVN
xbox [source: blackbolt.x-scene.com]
Since the 1.0 release of MC360 for XBMC, we had our own public SVN set up for users to download MC360 using various SVN applications. It has now become evident that having the svn for one skin isn't really productive and so with the help of Jezz_X we have moved the skin to the Official XBMC Skinning SVN. Xbox Classic is already available on this dedicated Skins SVN along with many other skins including the awesome Clearity and the new xTV skin. It is also likely that our new XBMC skin, 'eX' will be available on this SVN in the future. The address for the Official SVN is: https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/xboxmediacenter/MC360/
