How Cracking Groups Ripped Original Xbox Discs
xbox modrobert writes: "I can recommend this interesting video posted by Modern Vintage Gamer (MVG) on YouTube, old members here at EurAsia probably remember him as Lantus. Quote: 'Years before Kreon drives could rip original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs, Cracking and release groups were using another PC DVD Drive to rip game discs. This drive is mostly unknown from the public. Find out more in this episode.'

Lantus talks about emulation on Xbox
xbox modrobert writes: "Lantus has shared an interesting video about the early days of developing emulators for the original Xbox and the modding scene in general. He was involved in many of the Xbox emulators found in the download section here at EurAsia. Lantus explains the problems of developing with memory constraints and how he designed a clever virtual memory manager working against a temp file on the console hard drive, the Xbox only had 64MB RAM (some modded it to be 128MB RAM). I also remember Kawa-X, a CPS/Neo Geo emulator released by Mr K, using similar method for the huge ROMs like 'Metal Slug 5' and others. Thanks goes to sdmods for the heads up.

The mysterious Xbox Tray Boot source code
xbox modrobert writes: "An anonymous contributor has uploaded a file called tray_boot.rar to the EurAsia FTP server which includes assembler source code for the original Xbox dating back to 2005. The directories are named 'dualboot2' and 'triboot'. There are also Windows tools (nasm.exe, xbedump.exe and related .bat files) included to build the source to xbe format. If you know more about this then please reply with a comment."

XBMC4Xbox 3.5.1 is released
xbox [source:] XBMC4Xbox 3.5.1 is now available. It is a minor update from 3.5 to fix some recent problems with scrapers and the Addon installer:

* Fixes for the TMDB scraper – including search, certification, and images.
* Updates to the Addons installer script – it now includes the XBMC Gotham repository, as well as the Kodi Helix repository. Unfortunately we have no working youtube addon currently as there was an API change on youtube which stopped the older youtube addon working. There is a newer one for Kodi, but it requires some changes to be made compatible with XBMC4Xbox.
* Moved our XBMC4Xbox Addons repository off Google Code, since that service is closing down. It is now hosted on our own equipment along with the main XBMC4Xbox repository.

NMS TSOP Flasher v3.0 released
xbox modrobert writes: "NeMesiS has released NMS TSOP Flasher v3.0 which is a flasher pack for classic Xbox based on existing savegame exploits and it includes a disc image of Auto Installer 3.0. You can read more about the release and find a tutorial in the Xbox tech forum here at EurAsia. I had an interesting chat with NeMesiS on EFnet where we shared some moments from the past; XBMC, raincoat flashing, and more nostalgia. Those were the days! ;) "

Remembering the Xbox v1.6 hardware release
xbox Robert writes: "Shortly after the first wiki system was installed here at EurAsia back in May 2004 (ah, those were the days), I started the Xbox v1.6 event log which was a project to report on the events taking place in the Xbox hacking scene after Microsoft released the Xbox v1.6 hardware revision mainly in an attempt to prevent LPC based modchips. Reading about these old events today serves mostly as a nostalgia trip for those who were there, but perhaps fun for young aspiring hackers as well. Enjoy the old posts from legendary hacking teams like Xecuter, SmartXX and OzXodus who were in fierce competition back then, yet occasionally helped each other out besides trolling. There was honour back then (hehe). The whole community working towards the same goal; to beat the new protection. The events are posted chronologically with the oldest first at the top of the page towards the solution at the bottom, most of the source links are broken by now but left in there anyway as part of history."

XBMC4XBox 3.5 Beta 1 is now available
xbox [source: BuZz @] A late Happy Xmas to you all, and wishing the best for the new year. What better than to give you a new XBMC4XBox release to test though. Just in time :) The 3.5 Beta 1 release has seen a massive amount of work from the last stable, and includes all fixes from 3.3.3, but has been ongoing in development since the first 3.3 release. Released now as a Beta 1 as it does require some further testing, and there may be new issues or regressions, but I would encourage people to try it alongside the current stable and feed back any problems via the forum or bugtracker.

XBMC4XBOX status update for September
xbox [source:] In the last two and a half months there has been a lot of progress with XBMC4XBOX. This project site has improved, with better integration (visually) of the forum, as well as a brand new bug-tracker at which includes all the data from the old Sourceforge hosted Trac. The restoration of the wiki is currently in progress, thanks to the help from the XBMC team – especially Ned Scott – who has provided us with a full xml dump of their wiki to use as a base for the reconstruction. The forum is now getting established and currently has 400 members with over 3500 posts. If you haven’t signed up please do – and join in the discussions. You will find a friendly bunch of XBOX enthusiasts, with topics covering skin / python development, XBOX modifications and more. It is also a good place to get help if you are having any troubles installing or using XBMC4XBOX.

XBMC4XBOX 3.2 Released
xbox [source:] I am pleased to announce another release of XBMC4XBOX - v3.2. A number of bugs have been fixed, including a working fix for the lockups when using UPnP. There has been some significant performance improvements also, with the addition of the libjpeg-turbo library. Based on some code from XBMC, and some of our own, we now use this SIMD optimised library for decoding and thumbnailing JPEG images. The speed up is very noticeable – with navigating photos feeling at least twice as fast as before. XBMC4XBOX will now also use less memory when displaying and zooming in on images.

XBMC4Xbox Update
xbox [source:] As you should all know by now, Team XBMC does not maintain a build for the original Xbox. With that said, a few valiant souls have continued to port over some of the more beneficial lines of XBMC code and done other bug fixing the keep the aging Xbox as a valid option for many people out there. To this day, though more than 10 years old, the Xbox 1 remains one of the best boxes in the world for gaming, pictures, and SD video playback. Unfortunately, the dev team at our sister site XBMC4Xbox is currently dealing with some hosting problems. So for now, those of you still benefitting from your old Xbox may find them at their new site until the hosting problems have been resolved. Plus, if you are still updating your old Xbox, it may be worth noting that their donation page is only a click away.

The Old Girl Is Still Going...
xbox [source: Whufclee @] The old girl’s still got plenty to give. With hardware that’s now 10 years old you’d be forgiven for thinking the xbox classic’s time is up, however the old girl has still got plenty to give. True enough a lot of people now have HTPC’s, standalone media players or the latest games consoles to stream in true HD to their big screens. This however certainly doesn’t mean the demise of our trusty old xbox… Where else could you buy a media center that’s able to stream content from the internet (or locally) in a wide variety of formats, have an amazing library function, double up as an arcade machine and boot up in seconds? And all for the price of a couple of pints of beer! Yes these great warhorse machines can be picked up second hand for amazing prices, I know I’m not the only one to have picked one or two up for as little as 99p from a certain auction site.

Happy 10 Years Xbox…
xbox [source: Xman @] Ten years ago today, the XBOX console was first introduced to North America. Since then, it has seen the release of many great games, including many of the best selling video game series’ of all time, and one of the largest online communities for games which allows gaming online, downloading new games/content, and tv, movie, and music streaming. The XBOX is now one of the top selling consoles of all time. Even more impressive however, are the efforts of people who receive no compensation for their work other than the thanks of like minded people. Shortly after the release of this console, a modding community was founded and has been growing steadily since then. XBOX users are now able not only to play XBOX games, but games from nearly every console up to the 5th generation through emulators. There are also full versions of Linux running very well on this console.

Chihiro arcade games running on 128mb RAM modded Xboxes
xbox [source: Emperor Coconut @] The guys over at Assemblergames and Emuxtras have figured out a way to run Chihiro arcade games on modchipped/softmodded Xboxes with the extra 128mb mod, sadly the standard xboxes only came with 64mb ram so these games do boot on those but they seem to crash after entering the menu (this is the case with Virtua Cop 3 at least.) Team XBMC: Farewell XBOX
xbox [source:] XBMC (XBMP really) started as a program for modified XBOX consoles. In the following years, XBMC has grown into a multi-platform, multi-architecture media center that runs on most standard hardware. The hardware and legal limitations of the XBOX were always a concern and the Team has instead focused on running on the hardware that most people already have. The last official release for the XBOX by the XBMC team was Atlantis, over 18 months ago. Since then, one brave soul (Arnova) has been merging code from the main codebase into the XBOX branch in our repository. Because there were many users out there that took advantage of these updates, we had no problem with this. But times have changed. The XBOX has hard limits for what it can handle. Some users are satisfied with these limits, and we encourage them to use XBMC there if they are happy. But it is a popular misconception that official XBOX development is still taking place by the team, so we have decided to set it free. We have enough on our plates already, and worrying about a deprecated platform just increases our workload. A few days ago the XBOX branch was finally removed from our subversion repository.

Arsenic Beta Release
xbox [source: HIZLO @ via] This program is pretty much all you're going to need when it comes to modding Halo. Arsenic's hardcore power ranges from its visually stunning graphics to its built in game and tag editor. You can chose anything within a map such as scenery, weapons, vehicles, etc... and hot swap on the drop of a dime. Duplication is now made easy with our new point and click system. Any object you wish to move in Arsenic will move and suck to the mesh or structure of your map, this will save you a lot of time when placing stuff in your environment. Our built in tag editor is amazing and simple to use, for example click on a warthog then chose the tag editor. You will be able to edit a wide range of physics right on the spot, all changes will take effect when you save your map. Arsenic has a built in Auto Update feature which will be a life savor when future updates are released. All updates will come from so anyone using this program will always have an up-to-date version. The updates will automatically be applied when you open up Arsenic. As of right now the beta release will be structured around modding Xbox maps and tags.
