PsNee news roundup and more...
psx modrobert writes: "This news update is long overdue, but there are reasons for that. Back in 2015 marvin96 posted a story here at EurAsia titled PsNee, an open source Arduino based stealth modchip for PSX (Sony Playstation 1). The project development progressed over at assemblergames.com until the website was shut down for several months in 2017, during that downtime I forgot about the project, but fortunately the developers didn't and moved the project to psxdev.net, and now there is also a PsNee Project at GitHub. There has been a lot of progress and this impressive open source modchip is now working stable according to several reports. The source code is multi-region, meaning it will unlock PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J machines, handles antimod games while remaining stealth, it supports Arduino ATmega based boards and ATtiny MCU.

PSIO for PSX now available for pre-order
psx modrobert writes: "The PSIO device for the original Playstation with parallel I/O port is finally available for limited pre-order, it lets you play games from an SD card instead of the CD-ROM drive. Check the official site for more information, there is also a forum topic here at EurAsia."

PSX Action Replay source code released
psx [source: XiaNaix @ xianaix.net via maxconsole.com] Hello world. 20 years since PSX launched in North America. How time flies. To celebrate the occasion, HERE is the source code to ACTION.EXE courtesy of Gav himself, along with some other code snippets. Maybe even after all these years someone can do something with it. Either way a nice piece of history for ya!

PsNee, an open source Arduino based stealth modchip for PSX
psx marvin96 writes: "User TheFrietMan released an Arduino based modchip for the PSX over at the AssemblerGames forums, called PsNee. The modchip is verified to work on a SCPH-102 Playstation with the source code burned on an ATTiny45 running off the internal oscillator. The code is heavily documented to help novices to understand the inner working of the code. Adding features or otherwise improving the code is encouraged, experimenting with the modchip should be very easy with the help of the Arduino environment."

PSIO Prototype for PSX revisited
psx modrobert writes: "I posted a story about the PSIO device back in 2013 when the project was in early stages of development. There were a lot of negative comments about design choices and even remarks suggesting PSIO being fake at the time. Now, roughly two years later, most of the core issues have been fixed, for example the CDDA/XA support. The product has reached its final development stage and BETA testing has started. Check this forum thread for the latest development updates, and the official site. Thanks goes to lilkuz200 on IRC for the negative comment which turned into an unintended heads up. Read on for current features...

PSIO prototype for PSX
psx modrobert writes: "I stumbled across this news post over at gbatemp.net, but it's all over the place. Quote: 'Project PlayStation Input Output has been trying to load PlayStation 1 game images through the game system's parallel I/O port since 2010, and now it's ready to show off the first prototype.' You can find more info in this forum topic here at EurAsia. A quick observation; this will only work solderless for the first generation of PSX consoles, not SCPH-900x or PSone which lacks the parallel I/O port. The goal is an SD card solution, they've given up on hard drive support it seems."

MM3 hex dump for PIC12F629 released
psx [source: Gatchan @ gatchan.net] About 15 years ago, after the Playstation release, "modchips" started to surface. Theses chips allowed to use imported or copied games. The first release were using a PIC 16C54. A one time programmable microcontroller. This chip sends specific data stream to the main CPU, in order to authenticate the CD (SCEE / SCEI / SCEA, according to region). Then, the PIC was analysed and reversed by "Old Crow", and was called "REI Version". The code was ported to 16C84 and 16C54. In 1997, the PIC 12C508 was released by Microchip. Thanks to its new features (internal oscillator for example), this PIC became the best choice for a mochip, and the REI code was ported on it. This code saw multiple revision, to follow the various Playstation hardware versions. (source)

GaryOPA graces PSX with 12F629 modchip port
psx [source: GaryOPA @ README.TXT / PSX_12F629.rar] After 10 years of the original modchip design for the PSX machines which used the older PIC 12C508, we came across a bunch of un-modded new PS-One machines, and since we had the old source code for the PSX modchip, and the original design used the PIC 12C508 chip, which is hard or costly to get these days, and there is tons of the newer 12F629 chips around these days due to the Wii-mod. We decided to release to the world, our quick and dirty recode of the old Classic 4-wire mod for the PSX using the 12C508 which was originally coded by the famous Old Crow (Scott Rider), and updated it to support the newer 12F629 chip.

Sony ends production of original PlayStation
psx [source: gamesindustry.biz]
More than a decade after the original PlayStation went into production and with more than 100 million units sold worldwide, Sony has confirmed that manufacturing of the 32-bit console has finally ceased. PlayStation launched in Japan in December 1994, with US and European releases following in June 1995. The console was redesigned and relaunched in 2000 as the PSone, and last year, Sony announced that 103 million units had been shipped globally.
