[source: bunnie_ @ bunniestudios.com] I am joining siftdna.org in a moment of silence to mark Aaron Swartz’ passing. On January 25, I will bring down my blog for the day to honor his contributions and mark the tragedy of his passing. Aaron’s treatment by MIT is not unfamiliar to me. Back when I was a graduate student there, I extracted security keys from the original Microsoft Xbox video game console. I still remember the crushing disappointment of receiving a letter from MIT legal repudiating any association with my work, effectively leaving me on my own to face Microsoft. However, in my case, the faculty of my then-lab, the AI lab, were outraged by this treatment. They openly defied MIT legal by publishing my work as an official AI Lab Memo, thereby granting me greater negotiating leverage with Microsoft. Microsoft, mindful of the potential backlash from the court of public opinion over suing an openly legitimized academic researcher, came to a civil understanding with me over the issue.

Tell the Copyright Office: let me install whatever software I want on my phone, tablet, or video game system. bunnie Huang, author of Hacking the Xbox, is standing with the Electronic Frontier Foundation to defend users' right to jailbreak. Will you sign on to bunnie's letter to show the Copyright Office that users everywhere are demanding the right to jailbreak?

[source: xiaNaix @ psx-scene.com] In 2002, Guichi and I started what was then called PS2Newz.net Our small Playstation forum grew quickly and soon became PS2-Scene.org, the premiere source for PS2 scene news and information. With the announcement of the Playstation 3 and the PS2 in it’s twilight years, Guichi retired and I focused my attention on a site for the newly released Nintendo Wii console. We changed names once again and became known as PSX-SCENE. In August of last year, PSX-SCENE was first with the news of the world’s first PS3 modchip, PS Jailbreak. The site immediately drew world-wide attention, and was linked by numerous mainstream news sources. Then, in January of 2011, Sony filed a lawsuit against famed iPhone and PS3 hacker Geohot, as well as several other PS3 homebrew developers. Once again, PSX-SCENE was at the forefront of things, providing case updates and court filings on a regular basis. The name PSX-SCENE quickly became well-known even outside of the homebrew community.

[source: grafchokolo.com] Guys, i never wanted to take money from anybody for my work. And i always shared my work and code with PS3 developers and community. Recently i was working on bringing Linux to PS3 back, as you all know, unfortunately SONY managed to stop me. Many of you offered donations to help me continue my work and i always declined as you know. But now i really need your help and support in this fight with SONY. Please help me to pay my legal bills which are immensely because i cannot pay them on my own.

[source: LBGSHI @ ps2dev.org] As members of the video game homebrew/development/reverse-engineering scene, we admittedly spend a considerable amount of time re-inventing the wheel. This is sometimes necessarily so, but much of the time it can be avoided by cohesion and the application of standards. Parasyte and, to varying degrees, other scene members from GSHI, KodeWerx, RHDN, and abroad, are working on a new protocol, known as SRDP - Scalable Remote Debugger Protocol, as the title has already alerted you. Straight from the source's mouth, SRDP is "a remote debugging protocol, applicable to emulators and video game hardware, among other uses.", which "will allow the same debugger user interfaces to be used on any emulator of your choosing, or even on the real deal." This standardization means that any debugger UI upgrade would be a universal one, across any system physically capable of supporting the new features implemented. This would be a huge leap forward in debugger technology and methodology, and would save a lot of time and effort that usually goes to waste with every new debugger for every new system. Whether you're a developer, a regular user of debuggers, or just an interested member of the community, you can help, merely by showing interest and making a post on one of the SRDP threads. Ask questions that spark discussion, contribute example code, and feel free to spread the word to anyone you think might be interested. For a spec sheet in progress, drop by HERE, and for a synopsis of SRDP by Parasyte, check out the threads HERE and HERE.

[source: thelocal.se] Sweden’s Pirate Party has climbed into third place among parties running for the European Parliament elections, according to a new opinion poll released Thursday. The Pirate Party now has the support of 7.9 percent of Swedish voters, up from 3.4 percent from a week earlier, according to the Demoskop poll conducted between May 13 and Wednesday. That is still well behind Sweden's opposition Social Democrats with 35.9 percent and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt's conservative Moderate Party with 24.1 percent. But it could be enough for it to clinch at least one seat in the European Parliament, on the heels of the April 17 conviction in Sweden of the three founders of the unrelated file-sharing website The Pirate Bay. "Of course it is fantastic, but nothing is clear until the votes are counted," Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge told Sweden's domestic TT news agency. "It is still up to all those who care about basic civil rights and these fundamental values to go out and vote."

[source: Kojote @ pdroms.de] It's reality again, here comes PDROMS CODING COMPETITION v4.01 - Retro Coding Fun for Console and Handhelds! Coding on "closed" handhelds or consoles must not be a privilege; dozens of free development kits proof the opposite. The steadily growing "homebrew scene" produces unlicensed software for devices not meant to be open for everyone. PDRoms has always been in the homebrew scene to support the creation of new homebrew software, support programmers and artists. To show our love to the homebrew scene once again, here comes the ninth PDRoms Coding Competition.

You are hereby invited and most welcome to join consolereview.net as a member or just pay a visit to look around. This site was born from my deep fascination of video games which started when I played the first pong game as a kid. I kind of suck at writing reviews but like to comment the games in a relaxed forum environment where no sponsor ads makes everything biased, this was the general idea behind the site. I also managed to convince some of my friends over at #dextrose to become moderators, so watch your six! ;) "

[source: Brakken @ brakken.net] I've just uploaded my first "BlogCast" which is sorta like a "Podcast", but better. Well, whoever came up with the name "Podcast" was an idiot because it's just a damned audio file with some idiots rambling on about his life, kids, job or pets. Well, in this case it's me rambling on about my life, how I entered the "scene", started TehSkeen and founded brakken.net. Of course it's me so there's a lot of shit talking ass cracking to go around.

Unlike other scene sites who are either owned by companies, are commercial entities or sites that charge outrageous fees for advertisements TehSkeen was a privately run and funded news site. Due to this fact and recent events in my personal life I was unable to pay for all of TehSkeen's expenses and will not be able to for in the near future. This is why if people can contribute to the costs involved by donating I see no reason why I cannot relaunch TehSkeen.'

What you will find is my personal opinions on various political developments in the scene and the reporting of dubious activities that these 'other' scene sites participate in to fill their own pockets at the communities expense.'

Brakken has decided to close down tehskeen.com which includes the hosted sites modthatcube, modyawii, tehwii and the ISO-420 review center. This wonderful cluster of sites with a sharp focus on the Nintendo consoles regarding homebrew development and hardware reviews has been a great resource for many of us. We at EurAsia hope this is just a temporary setback and that Brakken will find a way to resurrect TehSkeen in the future.
