PSP 6.61 Infinity - An explanation
psp modrobert writes: "Davee has posted an interesting article over at lolhax.org describing the 6.61 Infinity internals beginning with a brief history lesson about PSP firmware in general. He mentions 2.71 SE-A as the first custom firmware for PSP, but I remember Dark_Alex first proof of concept firmware based on 1.50 released with source code before that. If anyone is interested it can be found here. Otherwise the article covers the technical aspects really well, Davee goes into depth explaining the bugs used to exploit the system and the process of restoring system stability, providing a recovery system, then finally load the 6.61 firmware."

PSP Release: 6.61 Infinity
psp [source: Davee @ lolhax.org] Here we are at last, the release of 6.61 Infinity. Itís been over 11 years since the PSP was released back in 2004 and itís somewhat impressive how long this device lasted. There is no definitive end to the representative scene, it just gets quieter and quieter. Iím not claiming this releases is the end of the PSP, but it is for me. Iíve spent the last few years working on individual work on the PS Vita and other projects and coming back to the PSP in October 2014 to begin this project was definitely nostalgic. The goal of this project was to bring the missing component of permanent CFW to the new PSP models and firmware. In this regard, I somewhat failed; PSP E1000 is not supported by Infinity due to a lapse in my judgement.

PSP Custom Firmwares for 6.61 in the works
psp [source: The Z @ wololo.net] Just a few days ago a new PSP firmware, version 6.61, has been released by Sony. After taking the firmware apart, we were able to check if the firmware 6.61 patches the 6.60 exploitsÖAnd it does not. All the signed content is still working (Homebrews, fake signed ISOs, sign_np signed ISOs) and so is the HBL, at least if you use the VHBL builds, instead of the old 6.60 XMB HBL build. The most important things, the Custom Firmwares and the downgrader, are, as of now, not working on firmware 6.61. But dont worry, it does not look like that the firmware 6.61 changed that much, which therefore means that the CFWs can easily be updated for firmware 6.61. Through a few dirty tricks it is possible to install a cIPL CFW (those for the PSP 1000s & non-88v3 2000s) on firmware 6.61 as of now, but it is worth to mention that the 6.60 CFWs are not fully working on firmware 6.61. The custom firmwares are currently being updated for the new firmware 6.61, so that a properly working 6.61 CFW can be released in near future. It is currently unknown if the downgrader will be updated for firmware 6.61, but we think that someone will do it, eventually.

PSP Genesis Competition Final Results
psp [source: wololo.net] Wow. 5 months after we announced the PSP Genesis competition, there we are with our final list of winners. First of all, I want to say choosing those was tough. We tested all the entries for almost a month (and this taught me a lot, from an organizer point of view, a judge point of view, but also as a homebrew developerÖ Iíll probably blog about that one day), and debated for a few days to decide who would be the 3 winnersÖ this ended up in a 2h hot discussion on IRC in which we reached our conclusion.

PSP 6.35 and 6.31 Downgrader Released
psp [source: Davee @ davee.x-fusion.co.uk] Sony, being as sneaky as they are decided to do a rather interesting move. As researched by Coyotebean, Sony started enforcing using a public key method of verifying KIRK data and removing the ability to load the old types of data. As they did this, firmware 6.30+ cannot decrypt the updater and the PRX inside and therefore cannot use the index.dat spoofing to downgrade. This application does the simple job of rebooting into the updater with a PRX that allows the updater to decrypt. A PRX that uses the pspdecrypt source and index.dat spoofing, nothing fancy. So, Iíll stop blabering, here is the Readme...

Sony's PSP Go leaks out before E3
psp [source: engadget.com] With just hours to go before the company's official E3 2009 press event, it looks like the pieces are all coming together. First a UMD-less game release, then a highly credible mole giving the PSP Go a name, and now -- live action shots. The images here were sourced from an obviously slipped June 2009 Qore video, and aside from giving us a look at the slider-based system (which, let's be honest, looks a ton like the questionably successful mylo), we're also told that it'll tout 16GB of internal memory, built-in Bluetooth and an undisclosed memory slot. If all goes well, it'll ship this Fall for a price to be determined, and it's actually not slated to replace the PSP-3000, as both of 'em will attempt to live on store shelves harmoniously... at least for awhile. Oh, and don't worry -- we'll be on hand in LA to bring you all the impressions we can muster early next week.

5.03 ChickHEN Homebrew Enabler Released
psp [source: Granite @ davee.x-fusion.co.uk] So comes the release of the highly anticipated ChickHEN homebrew enabler by Team Typhoon. After 1800 Lines of code, 4 weeks of stressful developing and countless amounts of tests the dawn of a new homebrew era for all the 3000, 2000 and 1000 users is on the horizon. What was said to be impossible by many is now a reality, all styles homebrew are now running on the "unhackable" T88v3 and TA-090 motherboards rolled out by Sony. What does the ChickHEN do? ChickHEN as a Homebrew Enabler that allows the execution of homebrew via the PSP XMB. Running via a vulnerability in the lib TIFF the launcher takes advantage of the system by performing a kernel exploit and rebooting into a homebrew enabled enviroment. The ChickHEN remains active until the PSP is fully reset in which case official firmware loads from the flash. ChickHEN unlike other HEN's doesn't touch the flash0 and resides completely in memory. The h.bin supplied in this download consists of a loader and systemex, which is a inversed order of systemctrl and rebootex.

Fanjita on recent exploits...
psp [source: Fanjita @ noobz.eu] I sit down to write this post with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I have to congratulate MaTiAz and Davee for their recent excellent work on the TIFF exploit and HEN. Their project is exciting, and I'm sure we're all waiting with excitement for their upcoming release. It shows that the PSP homebrew scene has not been defeated by Sony's latest efforts, and long may the spirit of competition continue. It's also nice to see so much cooperation within the community. Great stuff.

psp [source: Fanjita @ noobz.eu] You've probably seen the news that MaTiAz and FreePlay have found an exploit in the ancient game GripShift, which works on all PSPs (including PSP3000) and up to the latest Sony 5.02 firmware. This is great news, it's been a long time since a new game exploit was published, and it opens the way for at least user-mode homebrew on the PSP3000. Here at Noobz we saw the bat-signal calling for "someone who has experience in progressing exploits" to help out with developing this one further, and I'm glad to announce that we'll be joining forces with FreePlay and MaTiAz.

GripShift savegame exploit released
psp [source: MaTiAz @ lan.st] So, happy new year. I think presenting a new usermode exploit on the PSP is a good way to start 2009. ;) GripShift has a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames. The savegame contains the profile name which can be easily used to overwrite . The savegame file is pretty big (25kB) so you have lots of space to put your code there. I wrote a simple blob of code to paint the framebuffer completely white (to just indicate that arbitrary code is running :)). The return address is located at offset 0xA9 in the file. In this poc it points to 0x08E4CD50 (which is only a few bytes after the return address), and the code starts at 0xCC in the file.

Note: This has been confirmed working on PSP-3000 by FreePlay.
