Random quote from the conclusion: 'I would recommend the Acekard 2.1 to anyone who is looking for a NDS Phat/Lite Flash Kit. I would further recommend it to users who want excellent Homebrew and ROM support. Both firmware choices have a learning curve which I feel may be difficult for young children. Finally, if you can embrace the bugs which will arise from a constantly evolving firmware then perhaps this is the kit for you.'"

[source: Brian Ashcraft @ kotaku.com] At E3, Nintendo will be introducing new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS. In an official release, Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". It is not yet known how the 3D effects will work, but it is possible that it could work like this Japan-only DSiWare game. According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011. The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games. It is important to stress that the Nintendo 3DS is a new hardware series.

[source: gbarl.it via Brakken @ tehskeen.com] Nintendo has rolled out a new firmware revision for their latest incarnation of their line of Nintendo DS portable video gaming consoles. It seems v1.5 of their firmware blocks flashcards again which means you can either turn on off the Wifi or wait for a fix. Not is much known about other enhancements other then the anti-flashcard fix.

[source: maxconsole.net] We have just heard that Nintendo has today lost a major court case against the Divineo group in the main court of Paris. Nintendo originally took the group to court over DS flash carts, however the judge today has ruled against Nintendo and suggested that they are purposely locking out developers from their consoles and things should be more like Windows where ANYONE can develop any application if they wish to.

modrobert writes: "Minox_IX over at gbatemp.net has posted a review for the M3i Zero which is a flashcart compatible with Nintendo DS, DSl and DSi. Random quotes from the conclusion: 'As the flag-ship of M3 Team's flashcarts this was their first flashcart that was available for the DSi and had updating capabilities to circumvent possible DSi firmware updates. When it comes to circumventing updates it has already proven itself once, the question is whether or not this can be done again or if Nintendo will be able to block it on the second try. Much like the other available DSi compatible flashcarts the M3i Zero doesn't offer a lot more than their DS/DSL counterparts in terms of features (M3i Zero's counterpart being the M3DS Real) with the exception being updatability & DSi support. It also doesn't support any DSi specific features to distinguish itself from the other DSi compatible flashcarts.'"

[source: Opium @ gbatemp.net] The eagerly anticipated Acekard 2i firmware update has been released, proving once and for all that the card is in fact update-able. This update fixes the compatibility of the card with DSi firmware 1.4. Two update files are included in the download. Use the DSi labeled update to update your card. However, if you have multiple Acekard 2i cards that you wish to update all in a row then run the DSL update from a DS Lite to be able to update multiple cards without powering off the system. If you only have one card just use the DSi update.

[source: dovoto @ drunkencoders.com] Wintermute has been kind enough to open source the DSi hack we have been using. To run the hack you will need a way to read and write save files on DS carts.

[source: Opium @ gbatemp.net] Nintendo has just released DSi firmware 1.4 which adds Facebook photo uploads, a faster camera and blocks flashcards. We'd suggest if you value using flashcards with your DSi you don't update. Nintendo has signaled what we always suspected would be the case; they intend to start an arms race with flashcard makers and block their new DSi compatible cards with firmware updates. Now it's time to see how the flashcard makers respond. Some flashcards like the M3i Zero and Supercard DSONEi have updatable firmwares that potentially could save them from being blocked if the flashcard makers find a suitable workaround. Others like the iTouch2 can not be updated at all and will be useless on a DSi with firmware 1.4 and above. For now at least, DSi enhanced games don't require a certain firmware in order to be run. The update is confirmed to be live in Europe, Japan and Australia so far.

[source: dovoto @ drunkencoders.com] Most of you have probably come across a few bits of information about DSi homebrew. I was finally able to poke about a bit my self thanks to some help from Wintermute at www.devkitPro.org and got some of my own code running. Not too exciting but here is my first little demo using the same save game hack to execute code on the DS and the DSi. Its a simple “count to a million and change the screen color” demo to test how long it takes the two systems to execute. As you can see we are definitely in DSi mode and the DSi indeed is clocked at 2x the speed of the DS. More to come...

[source: Another World @ gbatemp.net] Andrew Mclennan, CEO of U.K.-based Metaforic, has announced a new anti-piracy measure for flash linkers. Specifically engineered for ROMs, and not homebrew, this new bit of software can be injected into code and will cause the corruption of ROM files which are pre-patched before launching. The code is currently specifically targeted to the R4 patching routines, due to its popularity. Nintendo is behind this anti-piracy software 100% as are 6 leading third party NDS software publishers. It will remain to be seen what hackers can do with the anti-piracy measure when it begins to ship, injected into retail carts, as soon as December of this year. The code can be altered to change its signature for each retail cart, potentially preventing an automated fix from being developed. Metaforic’s goal is to “annoy the hackers” as much as possible. They admit that the solution is not fool proof but it should require a fresh hack on a per-ROM basis. Thus allowing software a longer shelf life before it is pirated.

Partial quote from the conclusion: 'I don't think there is a simple way to say this, but the R4i is trash. I feel sorry for anyone who spends their money on this thing. It has a terrible GUI, very limited options, doesn't boot some games, has the worst homebrew compatibility compared to it's competitors. Now I see why they threw in the carrying case. It's so the thing doesn't break when you throw it on the ground in anger. It's been a long time, but the R4i has won ISO-420 Peice of Shit Award!'

Please note that the current update is only for AK2i with HW ID '81', using it on any other hardware revision will most likely brick your cart. Partial quote from the conclusion: 'The Acekard 2i for the Nintendo DSi works as advertised. It has excellent homebrew compatibility, runs commercial games with no slowdown and supports download play. The addition of the In-Game-Reset and Cheat Codes are good features to have. Throw in the multiple save slots and you've got a winning combination. So if you've just purchased a Nintendo DSi or are upgrading this flash cart won't fault you. The only thing I have to complain about is the promised support for RTS by the Acekard Team. Overall I'd say this is one rock solid solution for your new portable video gaming console.'

[source: Bushing @ hackmii.com] Nintendo recently began selling their next-generation handheld console, the Nintendo DSi. I picked one up on eBay from Japan, since they will not be available for sale here in the US until April. Why did bushing buy a new DSi, especially given the fact that he’s turned his DSlite on maybe 3 times and he can’t read Japanese? Because of the awesome pix, of course!

[source: cyclopsds.com] Team Cyclops are pleased to announce that for some time we have had a working test setup which is capable of running CycloDS Evolution on the Nintendo DSi. We must stress however that this is part of our research only; there is still a great deal of work to be done before we can even decide if a DSi compatible device is viable or not. The DSi features a completely redesigned security system which renders all current devices incompatible and at this stage it is unknown if there is any reliable way to overcome the new measures. We will continue our research into the DSi and in the mean time, please see the following video which demonstrates what we have achieved so far.

Hard not to speculate in this case, so like bambi on thin ice, here we go: If this hack runs by software exploit alone it's good news since the DSi features a SDHC slot which potentially means there would be no need for a flash cart (eg. R4 or DSone) to load homebrew directly from the SD card. Check the EurAsia forum topic here for more info and download link posted by Koalakun."
