REBUG on the OFW 4.55 update
ps3 [source: evilsperm @] We were going to release 4.53 but got caught up actually fixing all the cobra patches "Correctly" along with a host of other features. Then just when things were looking like they were finished 4.55 was released...So now everything has to be re-patched re-tested and some things need to be tweaked again, then it will be time for a release, but we are not going to release something half assed. Remember that Rebug innovates and everyone making CFW these days uses Rebug patches not the other way around... So once we have the features we want in there and its working to perfection, only then will there be a release. Sorry that I can not give you all an ETA on a release date. :(

3k3y users: stay away from OFW 4.55!
ps3 modrobert writes: "After reading the news about Cobra ODE failing for some PS3 models (previous story). I sacrificed a 3k3y 3KR (3KS-R) install on a PS3 Super Slim (4k), updated to OFW 4.55, and it failed to load GTA5 after that (just hangs in XMB)! So, for now, don't update to OFW 4.55. Only 'pass-thru' mode works so far in my tests on OFW 4.55, will try some more games. Check this forum topic for updates regarding my tests and official news from Team 3k3y. Users with older fat PS3 consoles have reported success with 3k3y on OFW 4.55, so this seem to affect newer consoles, as Team Cobra suggested."

Review 3KR, the new 3k3y for SATA
ps3 modrobert writes: "I've just started installing 3KR (3KS-R) in a PS3 Super Slim, the new soon to be released 3key solution which supports 4k, 3k, 2k5, 2k1 and 2k consoles in one main board. This is the first time I've opened up a PS3 Super Slim, the hardware design is a bit cryptic with the weird shielding plates which also doubles as cooling elements, and it's pretty clear most of the design changes were done to make the console cheaper to manufacture. Anyway, back to 3KR, compared to 3k3y 4k (3KS) most of the adapter logic has moved to the main board and the adapter is now reduced to a small passive PCB for the SATA soldering points as seen below. I'll keep you updated on the progress, check the forum topic for more info.

Cobra ODE news roundup
ps3 [source:] We are releasing another update today to the COBRA ODE firmware as well as an updated manager and 3rd party integration library. The problem reported earlier about the ODE not recognizing some NTFS drives was actually caused by drives using the non default cluster size. We have updated the user manual to specify that we recommend 4096 allocation unit size. Also, with this update, the ODE will now support drives with a cluster size of 2048, 4096 and anything above that. We have also added another new feature. Now our manager reports the ODE MCU firmware version. The COBRA manager will now print the version of the COBRA ODE firmware. An update to the third party integration library will allow third party managers to display this information.

3k3y vs Cobra ODE - Fight!
ps3 modrobert writes: "The 'feature competition' between Team Cobra and Team 3k3y is heating up as Cobra ODE is getting closer to bulk shipping (so far they only shipped review samples). The 3k3y Team has been shipping their ODE device for FAT PS3 since February 2013 and Super Slim for roughly a month. Last night (Bangkok time) some well known homebrew titles were released for ODE devices in ISO format by Deank; multiMAN and ShowTime tested on Cobra ODE, there was also a 3k3y version of ShowTime posted by Bubba, and more homebrew stuff at the As you probably know by now both these devices support PS3 Super Slim without using the BD drive key. I expect a lot more will come soon, interesting times ahead.

This means that 3k3y will support ALL SATA (Slim and Super Slim models) using only 2 daughterboards - one solder free for 200x/210x models and one for *all* other models!

Cobra ODE clarification
ps3 [source:] Cobra ODE is shipping to resellers this week. At the same time we feel it necessary to bring to the public's attention that some competitors are spreading lies and attempting to bully customers into purchasing their products. We have remained pretty quiet on these issues until now. However when the competition stoops too low, then its time to set a few things straight. :) Firstly, to say that Cobra ODE will be "easily blocked" is very untrue. From time to time an update may be required to our product to ensure best performance and compatibility. We fully expect to roll out frequent updates to our product, which is the very reason our hardware platform is upgradable. Whilst the competition uses a different approach to us, and this may or may not be less visible to big brother, it is also less flexible and relies on a database of titles in order to play the desired ISO. If your desired ISO is not in their database, then you are unable to play it... Cobra ODE does not have this restriction. You can play an ISO without the need for it to be in a database...

3K3y Fat 'No Keys' Public Beta
ps3 modrobert writes: "TheArtificer has released a public Beta firmware and Ripp3r software over at the featuring the new 'No Keys' ISO handling for 3k3y (PATA). With this firmware no drive key is needed, in other words no downgrade required, you can now install 3k3y in a fat PS3 with latest original firmware (4.46) from Sony. This hack requires one original disc (any game will do) which is used with the Ripp3r software and a matching IRD (Iso Rebuild Data) file to resign the backups you wish to play. The chosen original game disc needs to be inserted while playing your backups from hard drive. In this beta release you need to decrypt and re-encrypt the ISO to resign on the computer, but this handling will be optimized in the next release effectively eliminating the decryption step.

There seems to be some confusion out there about what is required when using 3k3y to play backups on a PS3 without having the drive key, so I'll try to explain that without the technical details involved in the process. Pick one original game disc, any disc will do, find the matching IRD file for that game, done! You are now set to play any backup out there using this one single original game. The other requirements are just software steps to create the ISO files to load from hard drive.

NOTE: This Beta firmware is not intended for 3k3y users who already obtained their drive key on CFW 3.55 (or CFW 4.30), there is no need to update then."

The Strange Story of Dual_EC_DRBG
ps3 modrobert writes: "This story was written back in 2007 by Bruce Schneier, several years before fail0verflow found a weakness in the random number generation to retrieve the crucial private PS3 keys in OFW 3.55 (and below). Quote: 'Break the random-number generator, and most of the time you break the entire security system. Which is why you should worry about a new random-number standard that includes an algorithm that is slow, badly designed and just might contain a backdoor for the National Security Agency.' ... 'Even if no one knows the secret numbers, the fact that the backdoor is present makes Dual_EC_DRBG very fragile. If someone were to solve just one instance of the algorithm's elliptic-curve problem, he would effectively have the keys to the kingdom.' Can anyone confirm if this indeed is the reason the PS3 implementation of ECDSA was flawed?"

The future of CFW on new PS3 consoles
ps3 modrobert writes: "zecoxao over at explains why we will never see native CFW (Custom FirmWare) for new PS3 consoles like CECH-30xx and 40xx (Super Slim). In short, for CFW to work the private keys are required to sign, and the only reason those were found for 3.55 (and older firmwares) is the mistake Sony did when implementing the ECDSA algorithm which was discovered by fail0verflow back in 2010, a mistake Sony presumably corrected in newer firmwares. He also explains how it is possible with existing keys to run homebrew on ODE devices like 3k3y and Cobra on these new PS3 consoles by setting self files to run as mounted 'fake' discs, because there are way less restrictions to run selfs from disc than in packages (pkg). The way forward for any 100% software solution, that is not relying on ODE hardware, seems to be game exploits, which is pretty much the current cat-and-mouse situation on PSP (or PSVita emulating PSP) with HEN (Homebrew ENabler)."
