FlashHax browser exploit released for Wii
revolution (wii) modrobert writes: "Fullmetal5 over at has released a browser exploit for Wii called FlashHax. Quote: 'This is an exploit in the Wii's Internet Channel which can still be freely downloaded from the shopping channel. This exploit is entirely loaded over the internet so you don't even need an SD card for this. The goal in the future is to have a little app store where you can launch any homebrew app without having to go through the Homebrew Channel or mess around with preparing files on an SD card. Unfortunately this doesn't work for the vWii since Nintendo doesn't allow you to download the Internet Channel on the vWii. Although if you install the channel through homebrew it should in theory work (untested tho).' Thanks goes to hitman43 for the heads up."

The Open Homebrew Channel
revolution (wii) [source: marcan @] Last weekend was the 10-year anniversary of the Nintendo Wii. We thought we’d dust off the blog with a little birthday present: the source code for The Homebrew Channel. When we built HBC, we always wanted it to serve as a reference for what homebrew software should look like: good design, professional-looking, user friendly, stable, safe, and supporting features such as network connectivity. We hoped it would inspire other software to aspire to a similar level of quality. But we didn’t want it to become an instant base for quick hacks and mods and endless cheap variations, and we also didn’t think proliferation of installable “channels” on the Wii is a good idea: we still think it makes much more sense to have one entry point into the homebrew ecosystem, and then launch everything else from there (among other things, because it’s easy to brick a Wii by installing things into NAND). And, to be fair, the code is definitely not as pretty as what you get when running it.

The Homebrew Channel v1.1.0 released
revolution (wii) [source: marcan @] You thought HBC was dead? Can’t say I blame you! Our usualy update cycle tends to follow Nintendo’s updates: Nintendo plugs one of our exploits, and we release a new version with a new exploit. At the same time, you get all the new goodies and bugfixes that we may have accumulated since the previous version. However, Nintendo’s care for the Wii lately has been rather sparse. We’ve been working on HBC every now and then behind the scenes: a bugfix here, a new feature there, and so on. Meanwhile, we waited and waited and waited for an update to break the current version. Alas, crickets. And yet! Recently, Nintendo did break The Homebrew Channel. No, it wasn’t a system update. It wasn’t a new Wii model (though they did release a new Wii, it turns out it works just fine). What they came up with was a new Wiimote, which, completely by accident, happens to be incompatible with the previous version of The Homebrew Channel.

Introducing: LetterBomb (the letter from heaven)
revolution (wii) [source: blasty @] Up until now the only way to liberate your Wii console and enable the use of homebrew with System Menu 4.3 was to use a gamedisc based exploit such as “BatHaxx”, “Return of the Jodi” and others. Today we are announcing a project that changes this completely and removes the requirement for an exploitable game. In memory of BannerBomb, we present you with LetterBomb , a brand new System Menu exploit that will allow you to enable homebrew with the push of an envelope ;) (no stamp licking involved) This exploit reuses (and abuses) some of some Nintendo’s Wii Messageboard functionality. :D

HDMIKey testing and brief review
revolution (wii) modrobert writes: "I feel a bit biased testing HDMIKey and writing this brief review since its sales benefit me directly, but I'll try to restrain my greed and be as objective as possible. That said, the product works great, right out of the box, just plug it into your Wii and start gaming. On my Samsung Series 6 LCD TV used for this review the Wii 16:9 output quality is a bit better via HDMIKey compared to using the official Nintendo component cable (not to be confused with the composite cable which looks like crap). I think mainly because the pixel colors crawl slightly with component cable, but not with HDMIKey. The product build quality seems good so far and it ships in a nice hard paper box as seen here. If you want to force 1080p mode it can be done by accessing the HDMIKey Manager via the Opera browser (Internet Channel), but keep in mind this is just upscaling, max resolution output 480p (16:9) from the Wii remains the same.

Return of the Jodi exploit for Wii released
revolution (wii) [source: roto @] Recently, news has spread of a Lego Star Wars exploit for the Wii. After last week’s Bathaxx release there wasn’t much rush to get our LSW exploit out there but it seems the cat is out of the bag. Releasing our own version now would make more sense than waiting or not releasing at all. No disrespect is meant towards the person who worked on the LSW exploit that has been making the rounds on news sites, but we figured it wouldn’t hurt to share what we’ve created. This exploit works on the original Lego Star Wars game as well as the newer (1.01) release (NTSC and PAL) all through one masterfully crafted save. Thanks goes out to lewurm for fine-tuning all code and testing the PAL region save and of course Team Twiizers for initial LIJ source. [segher: And of course, thanks to roto for doing all the heavy lifting for this exploit! And to drmr for the awesome graphics.] Have a look at the source code, or download the binary.

revolution (wii) [source: Segher @] Another year, another hack. The Indiana Pwns hack is quite old, and it appears that people are selling that game for extortionist prices now (around EUR 100 on ebay, seriously). So, it would be good if there was some other game we could use. lewurm has created a hack for the LEGO Batman game, thanks to the wonders of Free Software. I love it when I don’t have to do anything myself! So head over to his page, and enjoy!

Nintendo Firmware Update Kills Homebrew... Again!

It has been reported that the latest version of the HackMii installer is not affected by this update. They have also updated the DSi firmware to v1.4.1 to block flash carts in what appears to be a two-pronged attack against piracy! WE DO NOT RECOMMEND UPDATING YOUR WII UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!!

Probably works fine with other modchips also. There was an update on the game disc, could be System Menu 4.3. I used GeckoOS loaded from the Homebrew Channel to bypass the update, but it should work to perform the update on disc when using modchip if you don't care about the effects on homebrew stuff installed. Also, if you have upgraded to the latest Homebrew Channel using HackMii Installer (v0.7 or above) it shouldn't be a problem to do the disc update after that since System Menu 4.3 is supported.

Wiikey Fusion v1.4 Update Released

Various other minor bugfixes and improvements have been included in this release and we recommend that everyone upgrades. It can be downloaded from the members area.

The USB2 Release for Wii
revolution (wii) [source: dhewg @] Some of you may be familiar with a major problem in Wii homebrew land. Most applications and games found on use libogc, which in turn relies on IOS. While most IOS versions have a USB module, it is limited to USB1, and its I/O throughput make some applications next to unusable when using USB mass storage devices, others have annoyingly long loading times. The Wii game Your Shape changed this - it introduced a new IOS version: 58, and this is the first with an official USB2 module. Starting with the System Menu 4.3 update, IOS58 is available to every Wii. Thanks to some serious work by tueidj, all homebrew applications can now utilize this USB2 module through libogc. The Homebrew Channel v1.0.8 is the first version supporting it. IOS58 will be automatically installed when you update your Wii to System Menu 4.3. If you do not want to update, you can use Tantric’s clean IOS58 Installer.

Wii System Menu 4.3 Released

Here are some of the changes according to Deletes the Homebrew Channel and DVDX, title IDs HAXX, DVDX, JODI, DISC, and DISK. Now uses IOS80. IOS254 stubbed BootMii is deleted. Fixed Bannerbomb less stupidly this time. Added IOS58. HackMii Installer Userland+Syscall IOS exploit removed. NANDFS privilege escalation fixed. ES_AddTitleFinish now checks the signature (Trucha Bug Restorer and similar won't work anymore). Officially the update seems nice enough, quote: 'This update provides behind-the-scenes fixes that will not affect features but will improve the overall system performance.' The Wiikey Fusion card will be supplied with a sleek case, which can be seen on the front page of The main reason for the delay in releasing Wiikey Fusion has been due to the perfecting of some great additional features, most notably WBFS and the "softcore" system. Having a softcore means that the only part of the chip that could ever possibly need a JTAG update is a very small portion of initial FPGA code. Everything else (the majority of the code) is in the softcore, which can be updated by SD card. We'd like to thank everyone for their patience and support while Wiikey Fusion was perfected.
