modrobert writes: "Neimod and Yellows8 have achieved full control of the 3DS in kernel mode (arm9 & arm11) on an unmodified 3DS via game exploit. The exploit used is easily patched so they haven't mentioned exactly which title it is, only that it is a 'card-based' game. Read on for the IRC chat log..."

[source: Costello @ gbatemp.net] Long-time GBAtemp member and store owner OzModChips recently tweeted a picture that got our community excited: a powered-on Nintendo 3DS console displaying a message - "WE HACKED IT!". The information has been confirmed by various sceners among which crediar. You may notice that the 3DS top screen is fully lit which confirms that this isn't just some NDS homebrew. The author of this hack is reportedly the well-known scener yellows8; he also stated that the hack was possible through a game save exploit (he did not mention which game though).

modrobert writes: "Neimod and others over at 3dbrew.org are collecting donations for a decap of the custom Nintendo SoC (System-On-a-Chip) from a retail 3DS. The goal is to extract the boot code and other proprietary information. Quote: 'We have gotten a price quote from a professional lab on the deal (removal, decap, delayer, SEM imaging) and it came out to $400 per layer of the chip, which they estimate will come to about $2000 total. Plus the cost of the 3DS we will be donating for the hardware sample(s). The numbers of layers is approximate because they likely don't know how many layers are in the SoC until they actually decap it. In the worst case we estimate between 8 or 10 layers. For now we're trying to reach their initial quote of $2000 USD and send in the 3DS to get it started. Later on we can still decide to have the remaining layers imaged. You will have the noble honor of helping the 3DS community progress forward. We're also considering giving contributors a copy of the images produced as thanks.'"

You can also find some interesting debug tools related to this hack over at github uploaded by blasty and neimod. Hacking continues, next step is to 'pwn arm9' according to the plan. Check this forum thread over gbatemp.net for more info and updates. I stumbled across this info a bit late, but now they have my full attention. Thanks goes to Soojin for the heads up.

[source: Costello @ gbatemp.net] In what appears to be ground-breaking advancement on the development of the first-ever Nintendo 3DS flashcart, the Crown3DS team have updated their website to increase their progress bar from 70% to an amazing 72%! There is no doubt that we are getting closer to release, in fact I am going to preorder my own copy right now!

[source: blade @ gbatemp.net] Nintendo 3DS 2.2.0-4 is out, please do not ever update your console until you can confirm that there is a fix released for your card. In nearly all cases, the card must be updated before the console.

[source: Costello @ gbatemp.net] What *appears* to be the very first real Nintendo 3DS flashcart has just surfaced on multiple scene news sites. The Crown3DS, seemingly built over a commercial cartridge, is only able to play commercial 3DS games (one at a time) for the time being. We are waiting to confirm the exact list of games that the device supports. We have contacted the team and they've responded very quickly, yet with little information. We've asked for a compatibility list and are hoping to get it soon. But more importantly, what we need is definitive evidence which the team has so far failed to provide. So take this with a grain of salt because this hasn't been confirmed to be 100% legit. Although some sites are already taking pre-orders for the device, starting at $99 (temporary price)... UPDATE: the team has answered our first questions. They promise that the device is legitimate (though being a new team we don't know how much credit can be given to such a claim), however it only supports 1 game at the moment - the game shown in the video. They are working on dumping other games and enabling compatibility with all commercial games. They are trying to be extremely cautious as they are afraid their device might get plagiarized by other teams.

modrobert writes: "Crediar has released 3DSaveTool which can be used to find the XOR key to encrypt/decrypt EEPROM savefiles of 3DS games. This is based on info posted by Erant over at 3dbrew.org. Quote: 'On the 3DS savegames are stored much like on the DS, that is on an EEPROM in the gamecart. On the DS these savegames were stored in plaintext but on the 3DS a layer of encryption was added. This is highly likely a streamcipher, as the contents of several savegames exhibit the odd behaviour that xor-ing certain parts of the savegame together will result in the plaintext appearing."

[source: cyclopsds.com] CycloDS iEvolution running on 3DS in DSL mode on stock bootstrap and 2.1 firmware, no changes necessary - it just works. Unfortunately DSi mode is unable to be tested at the current time due to the lack of a Japanese region bootstrap.

[source: Brian Ashcraft @ kotaku.com] At E3, Nintendo will be introducing new hardware, the Nintendo 3DS. In an official release, Nintendo describes the portable as allowing games to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". It is not yet known how the 3D effects will work, but it is possible that it could work like this Japan-only DSiWare game. According to Nintendo, the product will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011. The Nintendo 3DS will succeeded the Nintendo DS series and will have backward compatibility for Nintendo DS and DSi games. It is important to stress that the Nintendo 3DS is a new hardware series.
