Anatomy of a Wii U: The End...?
wii u [source: hexkyz @] Welcome to a new write-up! Last time I wrote one of these was months ago, but I had good reasons for that (*cough*Switch*cough*).

Since as early as March, I've been working non-stop on hacking and reverse engineering the Switch alongside extremely talented hackers/developers such as plutoo, derrek, yellows8 and SciresM.
Together we have achieved incredible milestones and I'm really glad all our hard work eventually paid off.

That said, let's move on to the reason for this post: the Wii U.
If you are one of those few enthusiasts that still care about this console, you might recall last year's CCC where derrek, naehrwert and nedwill showcased their progress in hacking the last bits of the 3DS and Wii U.
Back then, they demonstrated their own exploitation path for taking down both the PPC and ARM processors on the Wii U, which was something that had already been publicly achieved using different bugs/exploits. This was also achieved much earlier by the hacking group fail0verflow which showcased their findings during the 30th edition of the CCC (back in 2013).

WiiU WFS USB Block Injector Released
wii u modrobert writes: "dimok has posted a brief tutorial and coded Linux tools to inject WFS blocks via USB over at This is primarily for those who updated to firmware 5.5.2 by mistake and are interested in restoring HBL or haxchi on their Wii U. I have uploaded a complete pack with a save exploit here. The procedure is pretty advanced, and the tools are compiled for a Linux (32bit) system, to use on Windows (or Mac) you need to compile/port the source code yourself. This also requires an SEEPROM dump from the target console."

WIP: Mocha CFW native USB hard drive support

This is work in progress and currently suffers from slow load times and similar limitations as Loadiine, but if you want to try it out Rolight over at has posted a little guide to help out. Announcing Wii U USBHelper
wii u [source: GaryOPA @] Nintendo is not going to be very happy about this one, with all the info now out regarding the Wii U console, which first all started with the Brazilian modders figuring out how easy it was to change the 'ticket' system on the Wii U from DISC based to eShop BASED, and then more info leaked out regarding keys, and we started to see CFW installs and more, and then some simple command line tools to mod the 'tickets' to allow games to be installed onto your USB drive with backups ripped from your own Wii U disc drive, but now its even easier to become a full-fledged game pirate on your Nintendo Wii U, thanks to the recent release of the Wii U USB Helper for Windows and soon to be out also for Android devices, you can now thanks to kindness of Nintendo's servers grab all your Wii U games digitally direct from them onto your external USB HDD, and then just plug&play onto your Wii U for tons of FREE entertainment!

Mocha CFW - The sweet chocolate to your latte!
wii u [source: dimok @] Mocha CFW is a custom firmware that is derived from iosuhax. It offers all the features of iosuhax and some addional features without the requirement of a fw.img on the SD card. Furthermore it combines all the current features of a custom firmware such as sysNAND or redNAND with signature patches into one application with a configuration setting. Mocha CFW hooks itself into the IOS launch process, right before it jumps into the bootrom, and patches the (at this point) decrypted IOS ELF in memory with new functions.

Haxchi v2.0 - a persistent WiiU hack
wii u [source: FIX94 @] After doing quite a lot of work I now think it is time to release this - Version 2.0 of Haxchi! It now comes with its own installer and does not need iosuhax, wupclient or any additional scripts anymore, just your wiiu, a DS VC game and a way to run the homebrew launcher. If you happen to have a DS VC title that is listed in this readme then go ahead and grab both haxchi .elf and .zip from here. The .elf goes into sd:/wiiu/apps and the .zip should just be extracted to sd:/haxchi with all its contents inside. That content right now just consists of a simple replacement icon, logo and replacing the game title with "Haxchi", its example config.txt will boot homebrew launcher by default and a fw.img on your sd card when holding A. The content of this haxchi folder can be changed to your liking - if you want to you can also add in an alternative bootSound.btsnd to replace the original which I did not do in this example haxchi folder. After setting up the content to your liking all you have to do is run the haxchi .elf in homebrew launcher, select the game you want to install it on and that is it!

hexFW for WiiU released

Brazilian WiiU Game Sharing Trick
wii u modrobert writes: "When first reading briefly about this 'hack' from Brazil a few days ago I must admit dismissing it as a product of the Wii U OTP dump via IOSU exploit, as in someone just using the keys from OTP (aka Boot ROM) to sign game specific data to run from hard drive. My mistake, turns out the timing of the release just happened to be after Donald_Trump released the OTP dumper, not really related, or is it? I'm still not sure how this method works exactly except that it involves eShop tickets and several other steps. You can find more info about the Brazilian hack in this forum topic. Progress in the public IOSU hacking!

As mentioned in my previous story about what the IOSU is and why it is important, several hackers have successfully exploited the IOSU in the past, but have so far refused to share their findings.

Quote Hillary_Clinton: 'I didn't find the IOSU syscall table myself, although I understand how it must have been found. The syscall handler is installed at address 0xFFFF0004. It is located at 0x0812DD6C. You can see that at address 0x0812DDF4 the syscall handler loads the address of the syscall table (0x081419F0) and uses the syscall number as an index into this table to find the address of the code for that particular syscall. That's how the syscall table and the code for each syscall must have been found. The negative value of the root hub index: it was just an arbitrary value that I chose to make the read end up in the middle of MEM1. I knew from reading the vulnerable code in IDA that a root hub structure is 0x144 bytes and that the root hub structures were located in IOS-USB's internal structure at offset 0x39EC. I knew the structure must have been located at the beginning of IOS-USB's local process heap at 0x10146060, but I didn't know where exactly at the time so I just sprayed the area in MEM1 where I thought it would read from with the appropriate values. I didn't know whether the read from MEM1 would actually work; I just tried it and it worked. I knew where MEM1 was mapped on the PPC side and the ARM side from reading the wiiubrew wiki.'

This is great news for the future of game loaders such as loadiine on WiiU where no browser exploit will be needed, and games can be loaded from USB port instead of SD card slot."

WiiU IOSU exploit in 5..4..3..2..1..
wii u modrobert writes: "After Hykem's farewell note there is a lot of speculation and rumors going on about the imminent release of an IOSU exploit to the public. There are several hackers besides Hykem who confirmed (with proof) having the IOSU exploit on Twitter, so my guess is that it will probably happen soon considering the possibility of a leak increases with every person currently sitting on this exploit.

Some of you might wonder why this exploit is so important. In short an IOSU exploit will make it possible to develop a permanent custom firmware featuring hacked kernel without relying on any browser exploit, it will also give full access to the disc drive (drive key etc.) and USB ports making it possible to load games from USB hard drive with existing tools like Loadiine, not just limited to SD card access as it is today. The WiiU would be totally hacked without limitations pretty much like the Wii.

As you probably guessed, Nintendo is trying everything in its power to prevent the IOSU exploit from being released to the public, threatening with lawsuits for anyone involved. I think this is one of the reasons nothing has been released so far, and the fact IOSU will not bring anything new to the homebrew scene except convenience, instead it will benefit piracy more than anything else."

WiiU 5.5 Kernel exploit has been leaked
wii u [source:] The Wii U Kernel exploit for 5.5 that has been left right and center of discussions on the Wii U scene recently, was just leaked a couple of hours ago on GBATemp. This exploit lets you run Loadiine (Wii U backup launcher), Cafiine, and a bunch of other cool tools. The exploit is compatible with (at least) firmwares 5.5.0 and 5.5.1. Developer NWPlayer1234, one of the people behind the exploit (along with Marionumber1) has confirmed the leak is the real thing. Itís a full fledged exploit and people have already been confirming they can run Loadiine and other tools with it.

Wii U Browser Exploit Leaked for v4.10
wii u [source: GaryOPA @] Finally the secret Wii U Browser Exploit is now out in the wild for everyone to enjoy on their Nintendo Wii U Console, if you lucky enough to still be at v4.10 firmware. There been alot of action in the Wii U scene recently, and now the exploit that allows you to do various things, one of them being able to dump key information has been leaked that works on the webkit-based Wii U browser for those still lucky enough on v4.10 firmware. This exploit has been partly blocked on the recently released v5.10 firmware by Nintendo, but with little exploring it should be possible to find the new vectors to get in. There is also rumors that this exploit might even work on the PS Vita or PS4 as they used a similar setup, all tho on the Wii U team fail0verflow mentioned before this is only possible because the NX protection bit is disabled on the Wii U browser system setup. AES obfuscation on the Wii U bootrom
wii u [source: deroad @] I've read the whole bootrom code and i have to admit, that big N has done a good job on hiding where and how it calls the AES code. Finding the AES implementation is easy, it's just before the ancast header check function and after the most useless function. Finding how the AES implementation is called, is a little bit hard, for two reasons: There are no cross references in the text segment; This means you will not see something like: 'bl AES_Decrypt'. There are no addresses saved in the data segment: 'AES_offset: .long AES_Decrypt'. So how to find it? You have to read the code, because the value is hardcoded and saved into a memory on an unknown address (like 0xE0000000); then a function will load that addresses to the count (CTR) register and jumps there.
