Happy New Year 2018!
general modrobert writes: "New year again, already? Time flies when you're having fun. I wish you all a Happy New Year! Cheers to good deeds and a new beginning. If 2017 was a bad year, then get ready for 2018, it's all primed now. Here's hoping we don't get nuclear winter anytime soon. Perhaps more important than ever before, stay vigilant and question everything. [The sound of fireworks in the distance.]"

The corrupt red screen browser system
general modrobert writes: "After seeing whole sites affected by the 'red screen' browser warning, for example, several console hacking related files on GitHub, and now finally the EurAsia download section, I thought it was high time to write a story. The file signature/checksum system the common browsers like Firefox and Chrome uses is corrupted by market forces. Files which clearly are harmless to the user are reported as malicious by business alliances protecting copyright or other interests, which then leads to the 'red screen' warning in the browser. As most of you probably already know, when it comes to antivirus, anything bypassing copyright protection measures (eg. cracks, keygenerators) are already flagged by most major AV vendors. The new thing here is the automated browser procedure (with similarities to the YouTube flag system) where the site owner (content provider) has the burden of proof.

Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers
general [Source: Tom Phillips @] It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges. Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

general modrobert writes: "For those who know me on IRC, CloudFlare and their MITM (Man In The Middle) for profit tendencies been a longstanding rant of mine. If you are interested, please read my forum post and feel free to reply with comments. The weird thing is that few people seem to agree or even acknowledge there is a problem, they just go with the flow. An old friend once told me; 'only dead fish float with the stream' (though it sounded better in the original language), in other words, question everything no matter how popular. ;) "

The Nintendo PlayStation is real
general [source: Richard Lai @] We turned on the Nintendo PlayStation: It's real and it works. When a mysterious "Nintendo PlayStation" prototype with both an SNES cartridge slot and a CD drive made the rounds back in July, many remained skeptical. Not even Sony PlayStation's head of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, wanted to confirm its authenticity. Or perhaps he just didn't want to bring up the bad blood between his company and Nintendo over this failed collaboration. Back in 1988, Sony inked a deal with the legendary gaming giant to add its then new CD-ROM technology to the upcoming SNES console. But when it came to money, they couldn't reach an agreement: Sony allegedly wanted to keep all the money from CD licenses and then figure out royalties with Nintendo later. As you'd imagine, Nintendo didn't take to this arrangement too kindly. Eventually, just a day after Sony unveiled this "Play Station" at the Chicago CES in 1991, Nintendo retaliated with a surprise move by publicly breaking up with Sony in favor of Philips. Well, that partnership didn't work out for Nintendo, either. But this infamous rupture did lead to the birth of Sony's very own PlayStation, which went on to become one of the company's most profitable assets today.

Showtime will be renamed to Movian
general [source: Andreas Öman @] I have decided to give this project a new name. This was not an easy decision but still a necessary one. The new name will be Movian. The reasons for this is mainly that the name Showtime is used by a big US TV network. Thus it is currently hard to find Showtime by just googling it. Also, as I plan to release Showtime in various app stores in near future it may result in naming conflicts or even rejections.

Atari 2600 E.T. Landfill Excavation on April 26
general [source: via GaryOPA @] Become a part of gamer history. Unearth the truth behind the ultimate urban legend. We’re excited to announce that the excavation of the long-rumored “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” video game burial site will occur on April 26, 2014 and will be open to the public. Spectators are invited to watch the team uncover the infamous Atari game cartridge grave. The Atari Corporation – faced with overwhelmingly negative response to the “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” video game – allegedly disposed of millions of unsold game cartridges by burying them in the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1983. Fuel Entertainment took an interest in the legend, and in December 2013, with help from local garbage contractor Joe Lewandowski, acquired the exclusive rights to excavate the Alamogordo landfill. Fuel Entertainment brought the opportunity to Xbox Entertainment Studios, and now, as part of a documentary series (developed by Xbox Entertainment Studios and two-time Academy Award® winning producer Simon Chinn and Emmy winning producer Jonathan Chinn, through their multi-platform media company, Lightbox), the team will excavate the legendary New Mexico landfill to reveal the true story of Atari’s bizarre burial.

Random quotes I liked in the official announcement: 'SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.', 'In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.'"

general [source:] When organized groups release pirated content onto the Internet, one of the requirements is that they package a so-called NFO (information) file with the release. These files are text-based but often include so-called ASCII art. Their purpose is to present details on the file they accompany. A typical NFO for a game might include the title, the name of the group making the release, the date of release, the machine the release is designed for, plus any special instructions needed for it to run. Over the years people have sought to archive thousands of NFO files and present them in searchable databases. One such example can be found at The site is purely informational and carries no copyrighted content, but some big companies can’t seem to appreciate that.

The Next PlayStation is Called Orbis...
general [source:] The Next PlayStation is Called Orbis, Sources Say. Here are the Details. While the official reveal of Sony's next home console could still be months away, if not longer, Kotaku has today learned some important details concerning the PlayStation 3's successor. For one, the console's name - or at least its codename/working title - is apparently Orbis. And it's being planned for release in time for the 2013 holiday season. The details in this story come from a reliable source who is not authorized to talk publicly about next-gen hardware but has shared correct information with us before. What they're telling us in specifics matches much of what we've heard and reported in generalities in recent weeks. A Sony spokesperson declined to comment about these details, citing the company's policy not to comment on "rumors or speculation."
