Retail DeBugging Startup Card for PS2
ps2 modrobert writes: "SP193 has posted information about Retail DeBugging (RDB) startup card for PS2 consoles over at psx-place.com. This is a clone of the Sony TDB startup card, which gives certain TEST/debugstation consoles (which support Magicgate) some DECI2 debugging functionality. Thanks goes to GaryOPA for the heads up, you can find his story over at maxconsole.com."

PS2SDK: Homebrew replacements for RMMAN
ps2 [source: SP193 @ psx-scene.com] Homebrew replacements for RMMAN (and related modules) are now available in the PS2SDK. As the title says, the PS2SDK has received updates from me, which include a new copy of the RMMAN module from ROM v2.20. There were probably only two versions of RMMAN, with the latter one having minor bug fixes/differences that don't matter from the user's perspective:

* Does not clear the connected status, if a unrecognized response is returned within FindRemote().
* The in_buf and out_buf fields of the SIO2 data structure are set to NULL within InitFindRmCmd().

As with any RMMAN module, this homebrew version also requires a new SIO2MAN module. The freesio2 module from the PS2SDK was based on rom0:XSIO2MAN, which is only just newer than rom0:SIO2MAN. There also exists rom1:SIO2MAN, which is even newer than rom0:XSIO2MAN (and hence freesio2), which is used with RMMAN by the DVD player. Therefore, I have also created a variation of freesio2, known as rsio2man (where 'r' stands for Remote). This is just like freesio2, but has a slightly different export table (2 additional functions exported, different ordinal numbers and newer version).

PCSX2 v1.0 released!
ps2 [source: pcsx2.net] After many long years of development, debugging and testing effort, we have reached a point where PCSX2 runs a great majority of the games, and there are no important issues that could possibly be fixed without requiring major modifications to the emulator. Because of that (and because we already felt it was overdue), we decided to stop thinking of new things to do for a bit, polish the stability, compatibility and existing features and release the result as the first major version of PCSX2! There have been tons of changes since the last release, including improvements to Jake Stine's wxWidgets GUI overhaul, cottonvibe's new multithreaded VU core and improvements on the primary plugins. This release is a big milestone that marks the way to new features and improvements!

Free MC Boot v1.8c released
ps2 [source: TnA @ psx-scene.com] After 2 1/2 years of silence, Jimmikaelkael today officially released the FMCB1.8c-Loader, which is the first released PS2-MC-KELF generated from scratch and Multi-region-flagged. The new MC-KELF-Generation was invented by Jimmikaelkael and a source/hacker, which prefers to remain anonymous. You can now install FMCB from a PC to MC with these PS3 MC-Adapters (CECHZM1)! You can sign MC-KELFs to your MCs directly from PC! You can make multi-region-installs! The FMCB1.8c-Loader finally includes the V0-Kernel-Fix for those old SCPH-1x000-Consoles (this gives users of those old models the ability to run a few homebrew-apps, which were previouly incompatible to those versions)! That means: Nearly everone on this planet can install himself and friends FMCB, regardless of regional restrictions. I suppose this new release is especially good for countries like Brazil, which imported their consoles from different MagicGate-Regions.

Performance is comparable to that of the Playstation 2's CD/DVD drive (~4 MB/s). Contains iLinkman v0.96, and should support all supported consoles properly. All SCPH-1x000 and SCPH-3x000 series of Playstation 2 consoles are supported. Most IEEE1394A disks should be supported.' "

PS2 External Storage Device Game Loader (PS2ESDL)
ps2 [source: SP193 @ ichiba.geocities.jp via psx-scene.com] The Playstation 2 External Storage Device Game Loader (PS2ESDL) is my Playstation 2 game loader. It allows the user to load games from a USB device. I had started building PS2ESDL in April 2009, fueled by a want for a good USB device game loader, and because I wanted to reduce wear on my Playstation 2's laser. There was a commercial USB device game loader, called USBExtreme (USBAdvance is a cracked version of it). However, it had poor game compatibility rates, and many of my games didn't work with it. Although PS2ESDL's developement was based on a lot of other people's projects, research and sample code, I've re-written PS2ESDL to use code written by me. It has been my largest programming project so far.

So please be patient while the bugs are being worked out.

VAST - Memory card mod announced
ps2 [source: maxconsole.com]
120 million PS2/PStwo consoles prepare to become modded via the use of a plug 'n play advanced custom memory card! A new product is preparing to be launched within the next two weeks which gives PS2/PSTwo owners all the functions of an advanced PS2 mod chip but directly from an advanced memory card. That means no masses of wires to be soldered, no voiding of the warranty, just a simple insertion of a special memory card known as 'Vast' which will fully unlock ANY PS2 console just as would a hard wired mod chip would do so. The product essentially exploits a flaw in the PS2 memory card system and uses MagicGate technology which means that the totally innovative design will be 100% secure. When inserted, the following operating system will boot giving any PS2/Two access to a wealth of features. For the time being, enjoy the following screenshots of the OS, we are expecting our insider to leak more information and media to us exclusively at MaxConsole as the launch draws ever closer.

PS2 Gets Lighter
ps2 [source: ign.com]
For some, the slimline PStwo is already too small for comfort. But believe it or not, Sony has managed to cut the fat even further! Japan's Nikkei Business Daily reports today that the new model SCPH-79000 of the PS2 hardware features a drop in weight from 900 to 600 grams. The system's AC adapter has also dropped from 350 to 250 grams. The paper reports that the weight loss was achieved by a reduction of parts. This has also resulted in a drop in production costs, something that's sure to benefit Sony's bottom line. Sony has started shipping the new hardware, which is visually identical to previous versions.

Crystal Chips status update
ps2 [source: crystal-chips.com]
Here's the latest status on Release 35. Many changes are occuring in the Crystal Chips software including the implementation of some things we've been hoping to do for some time now. Due to the large number of changes in the structure of the Crystal Chip BootManager software, Release 35 will contain BM 3.0. It may seem strange to skip from BM 2.1.6 to BM 3.0 but we feel that this is necessary in order to reflect the advances found in the new BM. Development progresses nicely though it may be a couple more weeks before Release 35 is ready for release. As mentioned before, many changes are being made and we need time to finish designing, developing and debugging the software. We will keep you informed as the release approaches.

Crystal Chips news roundup
ps2 [source: crystal-chips.com]
Just a quick update to let you all know what's going on. We're making great progress toward Release 35 and have improved several aspects of the CrystalChip software! In-Game-Reset, another feature only available on Crystal Chips, is now working with almost every single game with few black screens after reset! Video fixes are being given a complete rewrite and our super cool secret feature is looking veeery nice indeed! More is being done but we'll save that for release day. Release is still more than a week away with no definite date set yet but the wait will definately be worth it! We'd also like to take the time to mention a feature of the CrystalChip that many people do not know about. Unlike most chips, particularly Matrix Infinity, CrystalChip contains many features which make it virtually un-cloneable! Even if a "clone" were made(which is very very difficult), it is virtually impossible for it to completely emulate the CrystalChip since we have some secret commands embedded in the secure Actel FPGA which will only respond to a set of unique 128-bit sequences. Even attempting brute-force to determine what these sequences are would take a months, if not years, since you must reset the PS2 before the CC will allow you to try another sequence if you get it wrong. Not only that but even if one sequence was cracked, we have many in the FPGA so we can block clones simply by changing the sequence used to verify the chip while maintaining compatability with all existing genuine Crystal Chips!
