But for GND I should use thicker wire, right?

The length of the wires is not all that critical for this particular chip. One thing I did learn the hard way is to use 30 gauge wire and not thicker wire like that suggest. The reason why is that the thicker wire can get pinched when you reassemble the PS2 and short out. It did for me and killed a V12 PS2.

What's the best place to install the modchip?

I know that the modchip must be near GND but the v14 diagram (see attachment) shows that the GND and 3.3V are too far away from the other points, is that a problem?
