summ0ne's fix v12

------------

By soldering 2 resistors to the ps2 mainboard, we can limit the maximum power on the laser lens coils, protecting the ps2 from modchip bad sideeffects

Resistors used on this fix:
560ohm on tracking for ps2 v12.1 boards (rst)
2.0kohm on tracking for ps2 v12.2 boards (rst)
4.7kohm on focus for all v12 boards (rsf)

Diagram:
http://d-vices.com/summ0ne.jpg
Rst .............for 95% protection
Rst+Rsf ......for 100% protection

Theory:
http://d-vices.com/pstwo-fix.txt

Tips:
-Use 1/4W resistors because their pins are less stiff.
-Bend the pins so they align to the solderpoints = no strain on delicate
solderpoints.
-Don't heat the solder points for too long - you can burn the smd resistors.
-Dont let the pins be in contact with anything other than the solder points.
-Clean at the end with a q-tip + acetone.

all the resistor are used on this fix is available at radioshack...
heres what i found on radioshack (resistor):

heres what available there:
1/4 watts 4.7k ohm
1/2 watts 560 ohm (no 1/4 watts available, only 1/2)
1/2 watts 2.0k ohm (no 1/4 watts available, only 1/2)

The diode fix do pretty much the same thing by lowering the voltage, but summ0ne's fix is more accurate and cheaper.

Personally I like the Matrix PIC fix best only because it does NOTHING about the signal levels during normal operation, it only acts by shutting down the ps2 (power off) when there is a risk for damage to the laser due to crash in communication between the mechanics controller and the dvd controller.

My comparison sucks, but think "airbag" instead of driving slow all the time...

The only thing I would like about the PIC is the whole shutting down though. Intense game play, just beat a pretty bad boss, almost to a save point... Perrrr (PS2 shutting down).. Sony needs to fix this. But thats just me But whatever it takes to save the PS2.

crispy,

I agree. Kind of embarrassing for Sony since it is not a modchip related problem. First all the retail shops miss the Xmas peak because Sony stop producing the old ps2 and only make PStwo which lead to major stock shortage all over the world. Then it turns out the damned thing (PStwo) literally goes up in smoke after a few hours of play.

Yeah I saw this woman that was going to purchase the PStwo because it was the only thing that the store offered. Her son's last PS2 Probably V9+ blew after a few months. I warned her and gave here the Model # for the V5~8 PS2 to give her something more reliable that a 1~4 or 9~12. She actually took my warning and the sale rep was beggin her to purchase and said that I didn't know what I was talking about. I mentioned this site, gave her my email address and user ID for here and gave some other out side resources. Hopefully she listened.

Bumping a decade old thread because some if the files linked in the first post are missing, managed to find those and uploaded a pack.
