How to make NGC's RGB(VGA) Cable

source: http://www.geocities.co.jp/Technopolis-Mars/9984/ngcrgb_e.htm

Requirements

This is electronic modification. So, you need Soldering iron, solder, and more erectronic tool. I do not describe each individual tools.

A.You MUST have following items.

Component cable for NGC.(Digital A/V out -> RCA 3 plugs: You need original Nintendo)
10k ohm resistor. 1/8W Small one recomended.
Thin wires --- any of lead wire. I recommend, you will have 3 colors.
Vinyl Tube --- Internal diameter at 6mm. Thin skin tube will be nice.
Oven Sheet -- Oven Paper. Is for makeing dinner,sweets... Yes, this is for kitchen. Thin paper, hard, thermal torelant.
VGA Female Connector & Cover.

B.Recomends.

Isolation tape. Regular Vinyl tape can be use.
Double sided stick tape.
Thermal Shirnk tube(Sumi tube,Hisi tube..etc)

This mod require very small object soldering. So, you must have enoygh skill for that.

Disassemble connector

First, you need to cut-off original cable like this. This make mods easier.

001.jpg

Open the connector. See following photo.

002.jpg

You will see "MADE IN CHINA" marking on bottom side of the connector. There are 6 small thi holes. Put in some thin object, like screw drivers.Thi will release internal plastic latches.

Then you will see this.

003.jpg

004.jpg

Next, you will need to open "can". This is easy to open. Take off the cover part.

005.jpg

You will see one chip marked "MX". That is DAC(Digital to Analog Converter).

006.jpg

Mod on DAC

This mod is only simple circuit modification. Dettach PIN#12 of DAC from PCB(Printed Circuit Board) and pull-it up to Vcc by 10k ohm resistor. You can find Vcc at PIN#1 of NGC connector(Triangle mark will be there).

But, this part is most hard to do. Because you need soldering on such a small IC. So, I made following procedure to make this easier.

2-1. Remove solders from PIN#12 of DAC. Use mesh wire or someting like that.

2-2 Heat PIN#12 of DAC. Then slip in the corner of "oven sheet" between lead and PCB. Don't push soldering iron much hard.

007.jpg

Now you dettached PIN#12 from PCB.Next, you must isolate them Cut oven sheet to small piece, and fold it to double. And put it in between lead and PCB.

008.jpg

If you have double sided stick tape. Cut it small and attach it to PCB. This will hold resistor.

009.jpg

Then, put resistor on the stick tape. And bend resistor's lead to sutable position. And , solder it.

010.jpg

Soldering is only needed at 2 points. One for PIN#12 of DAC. Another one for PIN#1 of CONNECTOR.

For safety reason. I recommend you to attache isolation tape to reverse side of "can"

011.jpg

Your soldering goal will be followings. (Oven Paper not shown)

Mod on Cable

First, release the clamped point of cable.

012.jpg

Then, remove all skin of cable. Use some small knif cut the skin crefully and remove it. DO NOT pull the cable.

Loose internal mesh part.

013.jpg

Insert TWO lead wire into the mesh part.

014.jpg

Thease leads will be soldered to PIN#21 and PIN#22 of DAC.

015.jpg

Ok, Go ahead solder them to PIN#21 and PIN#22. PIN#21 is H sync. PIN#22 is V Sync. Remember the color of each cable and pin.

016.jpg

After soldering. Put mesh part back to original position.

Put vinyl tube into cable protector.

017.jpg

Next, put cable into the tube. If you feel hard to that, remove string and paper like thing which exists inside of mesh part.

Then, position the tube & cable followings. and thigh up them back like original.

018.jpg

All of thease steps are done. close "CAN" part and connector cover.

Attach VGA connector

You can find How-To of VGA connector attachement. So, I do not describe this steps in detail.

Prepare cable of mesh part. Bend it back toward to tube and cut it. Attach 2 wire for GND to mesh part.

019.jpg

Inside of the cable, you will see three silver leads. Thease are Coaxial cables. Remove silver part and separete into GND and Signal.

020.jpg

Put some isolation tube to outer part of coaxial cables.

021.jpg

Internal part of coaxial cable indicates its"color". Red will go to R.

Then solder this part to VGA connector. VGA's pins are follows.Do you remeber which wire is H (or V)?

1-----R
2-----G
3-----B
4-----N/C
5-----N/C
6-----R-GND
7-----G-GND
8-----B-GNC
9-----N/C
10----GND
11----GND
12----N/C
13----H Sync
14----V Sync
15----N/C

How to use

This mod will work like as transcoders. So, you need progressive output. To invoke progressive mode is depend of software.Check your game's manual carefully.Your first invoke ot progressive mode, you will need another TV. Most of VGA monitors can not accept 15kHz signals. When you using this cable for VGA, you can not see anything at 15kHz, even NGC's boot up screen.

FAQ

News:

My friend reported me that "D-Terminal" cable is easy to modify.
On D-Terminal cable, you do not need modify cable itself. In D-Terminal
cable, there are 3 extra wire inside. Cut of them from reverse side of DAC
PCB, and use two wires for H/V sync signals. If thease extra wires are too
short, add some lead wire to that. In this case, you need only modify DAC
PCB and change connector to VGA.

Precaution:

This page describes how to make VGA cable for NGC. If you want
to make 15kHz analog RGB/SCART compatibe cable, please consider
difference between VGA and SCART yourself.
This mod is only gives you information. You MUST have all responsibility
to your mod. Authoer of this page DO NOT have any responsibility of all results.
