Installing Imports / Backups using HD Loader Lite on memory card with swap method
by cdjstyle
EDIT: I happened to be using HDLoader Lite on a memory card when I do this method, but I would imagine it would work for any version of HDLoader (retail, Lite, reduced, etc.), so just because you're not loading HDLoader from a memory card doesn't mean you shouldn't try this.
First, in case anyone is wondering, my system is a V5 (or V6, but probably V5) US PS2 fitted with a no-solder mod to perform swapping with no other modifications to the system. Using US ver. Network adapter (ethernet & dial-up modem) and maxtor brand 40GB HDD.
Ok. now for instructions
1. Load HDLoader (I'm using the memory card Exploit. works like a charm) to the main screen (where you see the list of installed games and options).
2. Press the eject button for a normal eject and put the desired load disc in. To make this easy: - If loading a CD import/backup, put in a gameshark2/AR disk or Swap Magic CD disc. - If loading a DVD import/backup, put in the Swap magic DVD disc. After putting in the disc, press the eject button for a normal tray close. Wait at least 15 seconds for the system to read the load disc info.
- A little extra info: The load disc can pretty much be any disc your system considers a valid disc on normal boot, not only the gameshark2 or swap magic discs. For example, I had to load the TOC of the Devil May Cry Demo (US) in order to install Space Channel 5 part 2 (JAP) because the swap magic DVD isn't big enough
3. After waiting 15+ seconds, go over to the toolbar and select "install."
4. Before hitting any more buttons, wait about 5 seconds (to make sure the disc has stopped spinning), then do your special eject: - For no-solder mods, push the eject button down for 5 seconds for the tray to eject (without the system knowing the tray has been ejected). - For Swap Magic with slide card (or knife/card trick), this is when you slide your card under the tray to get it to open. Swap the load disc for the desired game disc before the tray automatically closes (in the case of no-solder mods... i'm assuming those with flip-top mods can take their time with this part ).
5. Now that the desired disc is loaded, at the "insert cd/dvd" screen (if you're not there, go back and start over), select "continue." Assuming there are no read errors (or you're not trying to load a homebrew app), the program should go to the name game screen. name the game whatever you want, select "end," and it will install as normal==
- Extra Idea for loading original imports (hoping to try it out soon):
If you have a friend (or otherwise have access to someone) with a different region PS2 and you want to load a game from that PS2's region, get HDloader to load on their machine fitted with a network adapter and the HDD you want to install games on (When I get to try it, I'll install the exploit on a memory card customized to use Japanese PS1 games my friend and me have access to as trigger discs). Then, after having HDloader running on their machine properly, install the import games with their import system as you would normally install domestic games on your domestic system. Take the HDD (and the network adapter, if you used your own), put them back in your system, and the import games installed should work the same as any domestic ones
- Extra note on Online Games:
To make sure people know this for sure: NO ONLINE GAMES CAN BE USED WITH HDLOADER= Why? Not only because of DNAS, but also because HDLoader does not allow the system to have access to the network adapter after it is loaded (I couldn't get Twisted Metal Black: Online, an early online PS2 game, and thus without DNAS, to get online). This could be because:= - the producers wanted to make people have a reason to buy a later version, and/or - there were bandwidth issues concerning getting games from the HDD to the system and having the network adapter load game data off the HDD and the internet at the same time (and they decided having the bandwidth of the adapter optimized for data access from the HDD only was top priority).
The only exception I can think of to this is if a game is without DNAS and is programmed to be able to utilize a USB ethernet adapter or USB PS2 modem (which only came out in Japan, I think).
